Chapter 5 - THE MAN IN THE DARK The study had been destroyed.
The wall safe was open.
A backup drive was missing.
So was Rachel's sealed evidence box.
Daniel moved through the house silently.
Then a dark figure crossed the terrace.
Daniel ran.
Michael followed.
Rain soaked his shirt as they crossed the garden.
The figure reached the wall.
Robert tackled him.
They crashed into the mud.
Daniel ripped away the man's hood.
Michael stopped.
“Uncle Henry?”
Henry looked up.
For twenty years, Michael had considered him family.
Now the man looked like a stranger.
“You should have left this buried.”
Michael stared.
“You helped Vanessa.”
“She helped me.”
“Where is she?”
Henry laughed.
“Already gone.”
Daniel searched him.
A phone.
A keycard.
A second device.
Then the screen lit up.
PACKAGE SECURED. CHILDREN NEXT.
Michael's blood turned cold.
He ran inside.
The pantry door was open.
Ethan stood alone.
Michael grabbed him.
“Where's Lily?”
The boy pointed toward the service hallway.
“A lady said you sent her.”
Michael's heart stopped.
