Chapter 9 - THE CHOICEHenry grabbed Lily.

Michael raised his hands.
“Let her go.”
“Give me the card.”
Michael stared at the gun.
Then at Lily.
She was terrified.
But she wasn't crying.
“Henry,” Michael said quietly, “you don't want to do this.”
“You don't know what I want.”
“I know you're scared.”
Henry's eyes hardened.
“I'm not scared.”
“You're losing.”
That struck him.
Henry's hand tightened around Lily.
Then Lily stomped on his foot.
He cursed.
Daniel moved.
The gun fired into the ceiling.
Michael pulled Lily away.
Daniel slammed Henry against the wall.
Police stormed inside.
Henry was handcuffed.
Michael held Lily so tightly she could barely breathe.
Then she whispered:
“Dad.”
“What?”
“He was going back to the company.”
She pointed to the keycard Henry had dropped.
Executive elevator access.
Robert understood.
“Vanessa needs him for the board vote.”
They raced toward Manhattan.
On the way, the district attorney called.
The dashcam footage was authentic.
It showed Vanessa confronting Rachel.
Henry's vehicle blocking the shoulder.
Vanessa shoving Rachel.
Rachel stumbling toward traffic.
The official accident report had been falsified.
Then Michael's phone buzzed.
A hidden recording from Ethan's watch.
Vanessa's voice:
“Take off the necklace, Ethan.”
Ethan cried.
“No.”
“The key is inside.”
Michael looked at Lily.
“What key?”
May you like
She whispered:
“Mommy's.”
