Chapter 13 - THE FALL SHE CHOSE Vanessa hung from the broken window.
Michael grabbed her wrist.
“Let me fall.”
“No.”
“She killed Rachel!” Robert shouted.
“I know.”
Vanessa stared at Michael.
“Why?”
He looked behind him.
Lily and Ethan were watching.
“Because my children are watching.”
Daniel helped pull Vanessa inside.
Police stormed the room.
Vanessa was arrested.
Henry was already in custody.
For the first time in eighteen months, Michael felt the war was over.
But the victory did not feel like victory.
At the hospital, doctors examined Lily and Ethan.
Ethan had bruises.
Lily had a small fracture in her wrist.
Michael sat beside them until morning.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered.
Lily opened her eyes.
“For what?”
“For not seeing.”
She studied him.
“Will you see now?”
“Yes.”
“Even when we don't say it?”
Michael's throat tightened.
“Especially then.”
Ethan reached for his hand.
“Are we going home?”
Michael looked through the hospital window.
The mansion stood in the distance.
It no longer felt like home.
“No,” he said.
“We're going somewhere safe.”
Then Robert entered.
He was holding Rachel's black document case.
“There’s one more letter.”
Michael's heart sank.

And the date was six months after Rachel's death.
