Chapter 12 - THE LOCKED FLOOR Gas hissed from the ceiling.

People screamed.
Daniel broke the glass partition.
“Everyone out!”
Michael grabbed both children.
Vanessa ran toward the server room.
Robert followed.
Inside, Vanessa stood beside the emergency power controls.
She held a lighter near a stack of paper files.
“Stop.”
“You're already finished.”
“I won't let Rachel win.”
“You killed her because she found the theft.”
Vanessa's face twisted.
“She was going to destroy everything.”
“Everything you stole.”
“She had everything!”
Vanessa's voice cracked.
Then she said:
“Henry was my father.”
Michael stared.
The truth landed like a hammer.
Henry had hidden his daughter for decades.
He had brought her into Michael's life.
And together they had built a plan.
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“You were easy.”
Michael stepped closer.
“You married me to control the trust.”
“I married you because you were weak enough to need me.”
The words hurt.
Because Michael knew there had been truth in them.
He had needed someone to make his grief disappear.
Lily stepped beside him.
“No.”
Vanessa looked down.
“He came back.”
Three words.
Michael's eyes filled.
Vanessa dropped the lighter.
Then she backed toward the broken window.
Her heel struck the glass.

It cracked.
She slipped.
