Chapter 1 - THE MAID ON THE MARBLE FLOOR The scream came just before midnight.

It was not loud enough to stop the music, but it was sharp enough to make Mateo Castillo turn his head.

The Valerius estate glittered beneath hundreds of crystal lights. Champagne flowed. A string quartet played near the grand staircase. Powerful men discussed billion-dollar acquisitions while women in couture gowns laughed beneath chandeliers imported from Vienna.

Then Mateo saw her.

Elena—the quiet maid who had worked in his household for months—was lying on the cold marble floor.

Blood stained the collar of her uniform.

A riding crop lay beside her.

Victoria Thorne stood over her in a gold evening gown, breathing heavily.

"Don't just stare at her, Mateo!" Victoria snapped. "Throw this trash out!"

Mateo didn't answer.

Something had caught his attention.

A silver necklace rested against the maid's bruised neck.

At its center hung a tiny ornate key.

Mateo froze.

He knew that key.

Twenty years earlier, a fire had destroyed the Valerius family estate. Lorenzo Valerius, his wife Katerina, and their infant daughter were officially declared dead.

But before the tragedy, Lorenzo had shown Mateo a drawing of a silver key bearing the Valerius crest.

The family heirloom was supposed to have been destroyed in the fire.

Mateo slowly approached the girl.

"Where did you get that?"

The maid pulled the necklace protectively against her chest.

"My mother gave it to me."

"Who was your mother?"

"Rosa."

Mateo's heartbeat changed.

Victoria's face went pale.

"She's lying," Victoria said quickly. "I caught her trying to steal from your private safe."

Mateo looked at Victoria.

"The safe requires biometric access."

Silence.

"You knew that," he continued.

Victoria swallowed.

Mateo bent down.

"What's your real name?"

The girl looked terrified.

"Elena."

"No."

He touched the silver key.

"Your name is Isabella."

Her eyes widened.

"I don't know anyone named Isabella."

Mateo stared at the key again.

Then he understood.

The impossible had just become possible.

The missing Valerius heiress was alive.

And she had been working inside his house.

Victoria suddenly grabbed a bronze statue.

"I won't let you ruin everything!"

She swung it toward Isabella's head.

Mateo caught her wrist.

The statue crashed onto the marble.

Victoria stared at him.

For the first time, Mateo looked at her without love.

Only judgment.

"You just confessed."

Victoria's mask broke.

"You think she matters?" she screamed. "She's nothing!"

Mateo looked at Isabella.

"No," he said quietly.

"She's everything."

He called security.

Then the police.

And as sirens approached the estate, Victoria finally understood that the empire she had spent years manipulating was collapsing around her.

But Mateo didn't yet know the worst part.

The silver key was only the beginning.
