Chapter 2 - Into the CatacombsThe heavy tires of the armored SUV screamed as Victor threw the vehicle into a sharp drift around a blind coastal turn. Behind them, rain-slicked asphalt reflected the violent crimson glare of the burning Sterling estate. In the back seat, Mia huddled over little Tommy, her body trembling with a mix of raw adrenaline and lingering exhaustion. The toddler had finally quieted down, his tiny fists clutching the lapel of Mia’s torn dress.

"We aren't taking the main highway," Victor called out, his eyes darting between the fogged windshield and the rearview mirror. Three pairs of headlights cut through the heavy storm behind them—Julian Vance’s secondary strike team, closing the distance fast. "Julian controls the local transit grid and half the state police precinct. If we hit a toll booth, we’re dead."
"Where does this tunnel lead?" Mia asked, her voice raspy. She leaned forward, staring at the darkened access road Victor had veered onto. It plunged sharply downward into an old industrial quarry near the river.
"Thirty years ago, before your father and Julian became bitter rivals, they built a private subterranean subway line between the Sterling estate and the central vault beneath Vance Consortium," Victor explained, downshifting as the SUV bounced across gravel. "It was meant to transfer gold reserves and classified research without public oversight. When the fallout happened, Arthur sealed his side. But I kept the override codes."
Before Mia could respond, a sudden heavy impact shook the SUV. A blacked-out pickup truck slammed into their rear bumper, sending sparks flying into the rain.
"Hold on!" Victor roared.
He slammed on the brakes while yanking the emergency lever. The SUV spun a hundred and eighty degrees, coming to a halt facing the pursuers. Victor drew his sidearm, lowered his window three inches, and fired four precise rounds into the lead truck's front left tire. The vehicle blew out instantly, flipping over the embankment into the surging river below.
Victor didn't wait to watch the wreckage burn. He smashed the SUV forward, accelerating toward a rusted iron door embedded into the granite cliffside. He held an encrypted transponder out the window. A heavy hydraulic hum echoed through the valley as the steel blast doors groaned open, swallowing the SUV into pitch-black shadow just as the remaining pursuers opened fire.
The heavy doors slammed shut behind them, cutting off the sound of gunshots and rain.
Inside the catacombs, emergency amber lights flickered to life along the arched stone ceiling. The air was cool, thick with the smell of damp concrete and ancient iron.
Victor killed the main headlights, idling the engine near an abandoned rail platform. He turned in his seat to look at Mia. Under the warm amber glow, the deep gash across his forehead looked grim, but his gaze remained steady.
"Are you alright?" he asked.
Mia took a slow, trembling breath, kissing Tommy’s soft forehead. "We’re alive. But Julian said... he said you brought us into his trap. He said you worked for him."
Victor let out a soft, heavy sigh, resting his wrists on the steering wheel. "Ten years ago, Julian Vance paid off my mother's medical bills when no one else would. In exchange, I became his shadow. I did his dirty work, Mia. But five years ago, I found your father’s real journal hidden in Julian’s private office. That was the day I realized Arthur Sterling didn't die in an accident—Julian had his car sabotaged."

Mia’s breath caught in her throat. "My father... was murdered."
"Yes," Victor said softly. "And when I saw Evelyn training her sights on you and Tommy, I swore I wouldn't let Julian destroy Arthur's line completely. I’m not playing Julian’s game anymore, Mia. I’m burning it down."
