Chapter 3: The Sterling Legacy

Chapter 3: The Sterling Legacy

The silence inside the grand study of Vance Manor was deafening. The ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner sounded like a rhythmic hammer strike, each beat driving the weight of the investigator’s words deeper into Ethan’s chest.
Ethan stared at the yellowed documents spread across the mahogany desk. His fingers hovered above the birth certificate, trembling slightly. The ink was faded, but the names were crystal clear: Arthur Sterling and Helena Sterling. Beside it lay the hospital transfer log dated thirty years ago, stamped by a long-defunct private clinic in the northern mountains.
"This can’t be," Ethan whispered, his voice barely a rasp. He looked up at Clara, who was cradling their infant daughter, newborn little Grace, against her chest. "My whole life… every memory, every sacrifice I made for the Vance name… it was all based on a theft?"
Clara set a gentle hand on his arm, her eyes filled with profound sympathy. "Ethan, look at me. The title on paper doesn't change who you are. Eleanor stole your past, but she couldn't steal your soul."
The private investigator, a battle-hardened former detective named Marcus Vance (no relation to the estate), cleared his throat. "Mr. Ethan, there is more. Arthur Sterling died eight years ago under mysterious circumstances—very similar to your legal father, Thomas Vance. But unlike the Vance fortune, which Eleanor managed to seize through forgery, Arthur Sterling’s vast global conglomerate, Sterling Global Holdings, has been locked in a bitter probate war ever since."
Ethan raised a hand, rubbing his temples. "Locked by whom?"
"By Arthur’s surviving brother, Julian Sterling," Marcus replied, pulling a sleek black tablet from his coat pocket and tapping the screen. "Julian took temporary control of the board as interim managing director. But Arthur’s will had a explicit contingency clause: if his long-lost son was ever found alive with verified DNA evidence, eighty percent of Sterling Global Holdings would instantly revert to that child."
Mia, who stood quietly near the doorway clutching a polished silver tea tray, gasped softly. "That means… Mr. Ethan isn't just an heir. He is the majority owner of one of the largest shipping and energy empires in the hemisphere."
"Julian Sterling will not hand over that throne without a fight," Marcus warned sternly. "He is ruthless, legalistic, and deeply connected to political figures. Word has already leaked from the police department that Eleanor’s safe was opened. Julian’s legal team is likely already preparing a defense to invalidate this birth certificate before you even step foot in a courtroom."
Ethan slowly stood up from behind the desk. The utter confusion that had consumed him moments before began to harden into something terrifyingly focused. He had grown up believing he was the dutiful son of Eleanor Vance, trained to be an unyielding corporate commander. Now, knowing that the woman who raised him was a cold-blooded kidnapper who had poisoned his adoptive father and attempted to murder his wife and unborn child, Ethan felt a dark, cold fire ignite within his veins.
"Let them try," Ethan said, his voice dropping an octave into pure ice. "Eleanor took three decades of my life. She nearly took Clara and Grace. I will not allow another corrupt megalomaniac to walk away with what my biological family built."
That evening, as twilight painted the sky in shades of violet and crimson, Clara walked into the baby’s nursery. Ethan was standing by the crib, gazing down at Grace’s peaceful face. The infant’s tiny hands were curled into small fists, her steady breathing the only calm sound in a world falling apart.
"You're thinking about him, aren't you?" Clara asked quietly, stepping up beside him and leaning her head against his shoulder. "Your real father."
"I don't even know what his voice sounded like, Clara," Ethan admitted softly, his emotional guard slipping for a fraction of a second. "I spent thirty years trying to earn the love of a monster who bought me like a stolen piece of jewelry. Every time Eleanor looked at me, she didn't see a son. She saw an insurance policy."
"Then show the world what Arthur Sterling’s true son looks like," Clara urged gently, looking up into his dark eyes. "You aren't Eleanor's creation. You are the man who chose to save me. You are the man who stood against his own mother to protect our baby. That was your choice, Ethan. Not your bloodline."
Ethan wrapped his arm around Clara’s waist, pulling her close. "We have to be smart about this. Eleanor is in a high-security holding cell, but her lawyers are already filing motions for bail on medical grounds. Meanwhile, Julian Sterling will strike the moment he realizes I’m coming for his throne."
Before Clara could answer, the sharp ring of Ethan’s secure phone cut through the quiet nursery. Ethan answered it on the second ring, setting it to speaker.
"Ethan," Marcus’s urgent voice came through the speaker. "We have a massive problem. Julian Sterling just filed an emergency injunction in the Supreme Civil Court. He’s petitioning for full court-ordered guardianship over Lady Eleanor Vance."
Ethan’s jaw tightened. "Guardianship? On what grounds?"
"He’s claiming Eleanor is suffering from severe early-onset dementia and was manipulated by outside forces into her crimes," Marcus explained hurriedly. "If the judge grants it, Julian will control Eleanor’s legal representation, freeze all Vance Corporation assets under a receivership, and block the release of the DNA samples tied to your birth records!"
Clara’s hand flew to her mouth in shock. "He’s trying to silence Eleanor before she can testify against him!"

"They're working together," Ethan realized, his eyes burning with outrage. "Julian wasn't just Arthur Sterling’s brother. He was Eleanor’s silent partner all along. That’s how she financed her takeover of the Vance estate thirty years ago!"
Ethan turned to Clara, his decision made. "Call our lead attorney. We aren't waiting for the trial. Tomorrow morning, we launch an emergency takeover of both boards. It’s time to bring the Sterling and Vance empires out of the shadows."
