Chapter 11: Breaking the Chains

Chapter 11: Breaking the Chains

The click of cold steel handcuffs around Julian Sterling’s wrists was the loudest sound in the federal courtroom.
The press cameras flashed furiously through the glass doors as marshals escorted Julian out in chains, his head hung low, all his corporate arrogance completely shattered.
Outside the courtroom, the hallway was filled with quiet relief.
Helena sat on a bench, looking up at the high decorative ceiling of the courthouse. "For thirty years... I thought the sky was just a small square outside a barred window," she whispered, her voice choking with emotion.
Clara sat beside her, gently taking her hand. "The sky belongs to you again, Helena. You're free."
Ethan stood nearby, talking softly with Marcus and the legal team. "What about Eleanor?" Ethan asked.
"She’s stabilized at the hospital under federal guard," Marcus reported. "When she heard that Julian was arrested and that Helena was in court, she gave a full written confession to the State Prosecutor. She admitted to everything—the baby swap, the poisoning of your father Thomas Vance, and the attempt on Clara’s life."
Ethan closed his eyes, taking a deep, heavy breath. A heavy weight that he had carried his entire life seemed to lift from his chest.
"Mr. Ethan," Mia said, stepping out of the elevator holding her tablet. "The board of directors of both Vance Corporation and Sterling Global have held an emergency joint session. They have voted 100% unanimously to merge both conglomerates under a single parent entity: The Sterling-Vance Global Enterprise."
She flipped the screen toward him. "And they have officially appointed you as Chairman of the Board, with Clara named as Chief Executive Officer."
Ethan looked at Clara, a warm, genuine smile breaking across his face. "CEO Clara... has a nice ring to it."
Clara stood up, laughing softly as she walked into his arms. "Only if I get to hire you as my chief advisor, Chairman Ethan."
Suddenly, Marcus’s phone rang. He answered it, listened for a few seconds, and then looked at Ethan with a serious expression.
"Boss," Marcus said softly. "It’s the hospital. Eleanor’s vitals are failing rapidly. The doctors say she has less than an hour left. She’s asking to see you one last time."
The hallway fell quiet. Clara looked at Ethan, her eyes filled with gentle concern. "You don't have to go, Ethan. After everything she did..."

Ethan looked down at his hands—hands that had worked tirelessly for a woman who had built his life on a mountain of lies.
"I have to go," Ethan said quietly. "Not for her. For me. I need to close this door forever."
