Chapter 5: Whispers in the Dark

Chapter 5: Whispers in the Dark

The intensive care unit at St. Jude Memorial Hospital was locked down like a fortress. Armed police officers flanked every entrance, while Marcus’s private security detail patrolled the glass doors of Room 402.
Inside, Eleanor Vance lay propped up on high pillows, surrounded by clicking monitors and clear IV lines. Her skin was a sickly, pale yellow, her manicured elegance stripped away, leaving behind a frail, hollow shell of a woman.
When the door clicked open and Ethan walked in, followed by Clara, Eleanor’s eyelids fluttered open. Her eyes, usually so fierce and calculating, were clouded with pain and sheer terror.
"Ethan..." Eleanor croaked, her voice dry and gravelly. "They... they put something in my water... He promised he would get me out..."
Ethan stood at the foot of her bed, his expression unreadable, arms crossed over his chest. "Julian tried to end you, Eleanor. Just like you tried to end Clara. The poison he used was a rare synthetic compound—the exact same agent found in my father’s autopsy report eight years ago."
A single tear leaked from Eleanor’s eye, trailing down her lined cheek. "I gave you everything, Ethan... I raised you as a prince... You were supposed to be my ultimate victory..."
"You stole me from a hospital cradle!" Ethan snapped, his restraint finally snapping as he leaned over the bed guardrail. "You destroyed my real family! You made me love a lie for thirty years! Who was my biological mother, Eleanor? Tell me!"
Eleanor gasped for breath, her chest heaving against the heart monitor sensors. "Helena... Helena Sterling... She didn't die in childbirth like Julian told the world... She was... she was kept in a private sanatorium in Switzerland..."
Clara took a sharp breath, clutching Ethan’s arm. "Ethan... your mother might still be alive!"
"Is she?" Ethan demanded, leaning closer to Eleanor. "Answer me! Is Helena Sterling alive?!"
"Julian... paid the clinic... to keep her sedated... so she could never claim... Arthur’s fortune..." Eleanor coughed violently, red spots appearing on the white bedsheets. "He threatened... to kill you if I ever told... That’s why I took you, Ethan! I wanted... I wanted the Sterling power for myself... but I kept you alive!"
"You didn't save me to protect me," Ethan said bitterly, his tone cold and unyielding. "You saved me as a bargaining chip. You kept me as a human shield against Julian."
Eleanor closed her eyes, trembling violently as the monitor began to beep at a frantic pace. "The safe... at the mountain estate... bottom drawer... false panel... there is a keycode notebook... It has... the Swiss medical account numbers..."
The ICU doors burst open, and a team of doctors and nurses rushed in, pushing Ethan and Clara back. "Her vitals are crashing! We need to intubate immediately! Clear the room!"
Marcus grabbed Ethan’s shoulder, pulling him back into the corridor as the medical team went to work behind the tinted glass. Clara wrapped her arms around Ethan’s waist, holding him tight as he stared at the chaos inside the room.
"If your biological mother is alive in Switzerland, Julian will move to eliminate her the second he realizes Eleanor confessed," Clara said urgently. "We have to act tonight."
"Mia," Ethan called out sharply to where the faithful assistant stood near the hallway elevator.
"Yes, Mr. Ethan?"
"Contact our private air charter. Arrange a flight to Geneva for midnight," Ethan instructed, his voice ringing with absolute determination. "Marcus, you stay here with half the team. Guard Eleanor with your life. If she dies, Julian’s secret dies with her."
"Understood, boss," Marcus nodded, unbuttoning his suit jacket to reveal the shoulder holster beneath. "No one gets through these doors without a warrant or a body bag."
As Ethan turned toward the elevator with Clara, his phone chimed with an anonymous text message. He flipped the screen up. It was a photo of the Vance Manor nursery, taken from inside the room, showing baby Grace sleeping peacefully in her crib—with a dark shadow cast over the baby’s blanket.
Attached was a short message:
Leave the country, Ethan, and the baby keeps breathing. Fly to Geneva, and you will come home to an empty cradle.
Ethan’s blood ran cold. The phone nearly slipped from his fingers.
Clara saw his pale face and snatched the phone, her breath catching in her throat as she saw the picture. "Grace! Oh God, Mia—call the estate right now!"

"I'm calling the head of security!" Mia panicked, pulling out her phone with shaking hands.
"No," Ethan growled, his eyes darkening with a terrifying, predatory rage. "Julian isn't trying to negotiate anymore. He’s declared full war on my family."
