Chapter 4: Echoes of the Stolen Child

Chapter 4: Echoes of the Stolen Child

The morning sun hit the gleaming glass facade of the Sterling Global Headquarters in downtown Manhattan like a brilliant blade. Corporate executives and press reporters swarmed the plaza, their cameras flashing frantically as black limousines pulled up to the curb.
Inside the grand auditorium on the top floor, an emergency press conference had been called by Julian Sterling. Julian, a sleek man in his early sixties with silver hair, sharp features, and an impeccably tailored tailored suit, stood behind a wooden podium, smiling with calm, practiced authority for the gathered media.
"Ladies and gentlemen of the press," Julian announced, his voice smooth as silk echoing through the speakers. "Recent tragic rumors concerning the Vance family have cast unnecessary doubt on our market stability. I assure you, Sterling Global Holdings remains unshakable. Claims made by certain disgruntled individuals regarding a long-lost heir are entirely fabricated—a desperate attempt by external opportunists to destabilize our stock."
Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the back of the auditorium slammed open.
The room went dead silent. Cameras pivoted in unison as Ethan Vance walked down the central aisle, flanked by Clara—who looked stunning and radiant in a midnight-blue blazer—and a legal team of six senior attorneys carrying thick, leather-bound briefcases.
"If the claims are fabricated, Julian, then why is your legal team scrambling to suppress the court-certified DNA registry?" Ethan’s voice rang out, clear and powerful, cutting through the murmurs of the crowd.
Julian’s serene smile faltered for a microsecond before his eyes hardened into slits. "Ethan Vance. This is a private corporate assembly. Security, escort this young man out."
Two burly security officers stepped forward, but Ethan didn't even slow his pace. He pulled a rolled legal document from his jacket and tossed it squarely onto the podium in front of Julian.
"That is a federal subpoena backed by an international injunction," Ethan declared coldly. "Issued two hours ago by the High District Court. It freezes all voting rights held by the interim board pending the immediate verification of my biological lineage. And right behind me is the State Prosecutor."
A murmur swept through the room like a sudden gust of wind. Reporters began frantically shouting questions, their microphone booms reaching forward.
"Mr. Vance! Are you claiming to be Arthur Sterling's stolen son?" "Is it true Lady Eleanor Vance faces life imprisonment?"
Julian slammed his hand onto the podium, his mask of corporate professionalism finally cracking. "You are an intruder! You have no standing in this room, boy! Eleanor raised you, paid for your education, gave you a name! You owe her your life!"
Clara stepped forward, standing side-by-side with Ethan, her voice resonant and unflinching. "Eleanor didn't give him a life, Mr. Sterling. She stole him from his mother’s arms, used him to steal a fortune, and then tried to murder me and my baby when the truth threatened her greed. And we have corporate bank records showing millions of dollars transferred from Sterling accounts directly to Eleanor’s offshore funds over the last fifteen years."
The room erupted into absolute chaos. Camera flashes blinded the stage as Julian turned pale. His hands shook as he looked down at the court documents laying on the podium.
"You think a piece of paper gives you power?" Julian spat under his breath, leaning close over the microphone so only Ethan could hear. "Your biological father died broke in spirit because he fought me, Ethan. You might have his blood, but I have this entire city in my pocket. You won't live to see the end of this trial."
"My father died because he trusted a snake," Ethan replied quietly, stepping right into Julian's personal space, his gaze unyielding. "I don't make the same mistake. Look around you, Julian. The press is recording every word. The board members are already walking away from you. You're alone."
Julian looked up and realized to his horror that three of the company's major institutional investors were already leaving their seats, whispering hurriedly to their counsel. The stock tickers displayed on the wall monitors showed Sterling Global shares taking a sharp, vertical nose-dive as news of the federal injunction hit the trading floor.
"Meeting adjourned!" Julian snarled, shoving his way past his aides toward the private executive exit behind the stage.
As the press flooded forward to surround Ethan and Clara, Mia arrived through the side door, holding a secure encrypted phone. She pushed through the security line and handed the phone to Ethan.
"Mr. Ethan, it’s the warden at the Central Detention Center," Mia said frantically, her eyes wide with fear. "Something happened in Lady Eleanor’s cell twenty minutes ago."
Ethan’s heart dropped. He pulled the phone to his ear. "This is Ethan. What happened?"
"Mr. Vance, your legal mother, Eleanor Vance, suffered a sudden medical emergency," the warden reported over the line. "She collapsed during her daily walk. The prison medical team suspects acute neurotoxin exposure. She’s being rushed under armed guard to St. Jude Memorial Hospital."
Ethan looked at Clara, a cold chill running down his spine. Eleanor was poisoned inside a high-security state facility.

"Julian," Clara whispered, reading the sudden dread on Ethan's face. "He’s trying to eliminate the only witness who can directly connect him to your father’s murder and your kidnapping!"
"We're going to that hospital right now," Ethan growled, seizing Clara’s hand tightly. "Eleanor may be a monster, but she is the key to tearing this entire conspiracy apart. I won't let them kill her before she speaks the truth!"
