Chapter 10: The Darkest Hour

Chapter 10: The Darkest Hour

The Manhattan Federal Courthouse was a zoo. Hundreds of press reporters, protesters, stock traders, and legal observers packed the broad marble steps outside the massive brass doors.
Inside Courtroom 404, the atmosphere was suffocating.
Julian Sterling sat at the defense table, surrounded by eight high-priced defense lawyers. He looked confident, tapping his gold pen against a yellow legal pad, occasionally smirking at the empty prosecution table across the aisle.
"The court will come to order," Judge Richard Harris declared, banging his wooden gavel against the bench. "This emergency hearing is convened to address the probate challenges and criminal allegations surrounding the estate of the late Arthur Sterling."
Julian’s lead attorney stood up, buttoning his jacket. "Your Honor, the petitioner Ethan Vance has failed to appear. He is currently an international fugitive fleeing federal warrants. We move for an immediate default judgment confirming Julian Sterling as sole legal administrator of the Sterling estate."
"Motion denied for five minutes, counselor," Judge Harris said sternly, checking his watch. "The court will wait until the scheduled hour of—"
Suddenly, the heavy oak doors at the back of the courtroom burst open.
A gasp echoed through the crowded gallery.
Ethan Vance walked into the courtroom. He was dressed in a sharp charcoal suit, his head held high, walking with immense power and purpose. Beside him walked Clara, her hand linked firmly in his arm.
And behind them, pushed in a wheelchair by Marcus, was Helena Sterling.
Julian’s gold pen snapped in half in his hand. His face drained of all color, his eyes widening in pure horror as if he were seeing a ghost.
"That's impossible..." Julian stammered under his breath, stumbling back against his chair.
"Your Honor," Ethan’s lead counsel announced, stepping forward to the podium. "We present to the court Helena Sterling, legitimate widow of Arthur Sterling, and Ethan Sterling-Vance, the biological son stolen at birth."
"Objection!" Julian’s attorney screamed, jumping to his feet. "This is an outrage! That woman is legally incompetent and has been institutionalized for three decades!"
"I am as sane as you are, counselor," Helena’s voice rang out across the silent courtroom. She stood up from her wheelchair, leaning slightly on Ethan’s arm, but standing tall and proud before the judge’s bench.
"And I have brought the evidence my late husband hid from the man who murdered him," Helena declared coldly, looking straight at Julian.
Mia walked forward, carrying a heavy metal briefcase. She opened it before the clerk’s desk, revealing a series of encrypted flash drives and sworn affidavits from the Swiss medical staff.
"Your Honor," Ethan spoke up, his powerful voice filling every corner of the vast room. "These drives contain twenty-eight years of transaction logs proving that Julian Sterling systematically embezzled over one billion dollars from Sterling Global, using Lady Eleanor Vance as his bagman and laundering the funds through offshore accounts to pay for my mother’s illegal imprisonment."
Julian jumped out of his chair, pointing a trembling finger at Ethan. "You lie! She’s crazy! He’s an impostor! Security, arrest them! Arrest them now!"
"Sit down, Mr. Sterling!" Judge Harris thundered, slamming his gavel repeatedly. "Sit down or I will have you held in contempt immediately!"
Two federal marshals stepped up behind Julian, placing their hands on their sidearms.
Helena stepped closer to the prosecution table, pulling a small silver key from her purse and placing it onto the judge’s desk.
"That is the key to Arthur’s personal safe deposit box at the Swiss National Bank," Helena stated softly. "Inside is a recorded audio tape made by Arthur forty-eight hours before he was poisoned. In that tape, Arthur details how Julian and Eleanor threatened to murder our newborn baby—Ethan—if Arthur didn't sign over his voting proxies."
A wave of absolute shock rippled through the gallery. Reporters frantically typed on their laptops, while key board members sitting in the public seats stared at Julian with utter disgust.
Julian collapsed back into his leather chair, sweat pouring down his forehead as his legal team desperately whispered amongst themselves, realizing their defense had completely collapsed.
Judge Harris looked over the submitted documents, his face growing darker with every page he turned. He looked up at Julian, his eyes burning with judicial fury.
"Julian Sterling," Judge Harris said, his voice cold and definitive. "The court hereby revokes all your administrative powers over Sterling Global Holdings immediately. Furthermore..."
The judge nodded to the back of the room.

Four federal agents stepped through the doors, holding open federal arrest warrants.
"...you are under arrest for federal grand larceny, kidnapping, corporate fraud, and conspiracy to commit murder."
