Chapter 9: Clara’s Stand

The flight back across the Atlantic was executed in total radio silence. To evade the Interpol Red Notice flagged at commercial airports, Marcus arranged for the Gulfstream to land at a private military airfield in upstate New York, secured by allies of the late Arthur Sterling.

By dawn the next morning, the grand Vance Manor was surrounded.

Four police cruisers and two black government sedans were parked outside the front gates, their red and blue lights flashing against the morning fog. A senior federal marshal stood at the front door, pounding his fist against the heavy mahogany wood.

"Clara Vance! Open this door under authority of the Federal District Court!" the marshal demanded through a bullhorn.

The massive double doors swung open slowly.

Clara stepped out onto the marble porch. She wore a tailored black suit, her hair styled in an elegant topknot, standing tall and utterly unbothered by the armed officers standing on her lawn. Behind her stood Mia and a legal team of four prominent constitutional attorneys.

"Marshal," Clara said coolly, her voice projecting with absolute authority across the courtyard. "You are trespassing on private property."

"Mrs. Vance, we have a warrant for the arrest of Ethan Vance for international kidnapping, and a seizure order for the Vance Corporation assets!" the marshal stated, stepping up the stairs with two officers.

"Show me the judge’s original wet-ink signature," Clara replied, extending her hand calmly.

The marshal hesitated, pausing on the step. "The warrant was issued electronically under an emergency order requested by Julian Sterling—"

"An emergency order requested by an unindicted co-conspirator whose voting power on the board was revoked two days ago," Clara interrupted sharply, stepping closer to the edge of the porch. Her attorney immediately handed the marshal a thick legal injunction.

"That is a stay of execution granted an hour ago by the State Supreme Appellate Division," Clara declared, looking the marshal dead in the eye. "It nullifies all emergency filings made by Julian Sterling pending a full evidentiary hearing at 2:00 PM today. If your officers step one foot inside my home, I will have every one of you sued individually for civil rights violations."

The news vans parked outside the gates were filming every second of the confrontation. Clara’s fearless defense of her home and husband was being broadcast live across every major cable network in the nation.

Inside the legal compound room beneath the mansion’s study, Ethan watched the live feed on a wall monitor, holding baby Grace in his arms.

Helena sat in an armchair beside him, watching Clara on the screen with deep admiration. "She is a warrior, Ethan. Arthur would have loved her."

"She saved my life long before I saved hers," Ethan murmured softly, kissing the top of Grace’s head.

"Ethan," Marcus said, stepping into the subterranean room. "The transport vehicle is ready in the underground tunnel. The court hearing begins in two hours. Julian’s team will have the entire federal building surrounded by private security. They won't let us reach the courtroom floor alive if they can help it."

Ethan handed Grace gently back to Mia, who held the baby securely. He turned to his mother, helping her stand up from the armchair.

"Mother, are you ready for this?" Ethan asked.

Helena looked at him, her green eyes flashing with an unyielding steel that thirty years of isolation had failed to extinguish. "I have waited thirty years to look Julian Sterling in the eye and take back what he stole from my family. Lead the way, my son."

Outside on the porch, Clara finished signing the marshal’s notice, forcing the police detail to withdraw to the outer perimeter gates.

As the officers retreated, Clara turned back into the mansion, her heart pounding in her chest. She walked straight to the study where Ethan was waiting by the hidden elevator door.

Ethan pulled her into a fierce, passionate embrace, holding her as if he would never let go. "You were incredible out there."

"We are in this together, Ethan," Clara whispered into his neck, holding him tight. "No more running. No more hidden truths. Today, we end this."
