Chapter 1 - THE GIRL EATING IN THE DARKBy the time Charlotte Whitaker pulled into the driveway, the neighborhood was already asleep.

The San Bernardino night was unusually still. A dry wind moved through the palm trees, brushing their fronds against the darkness like whispered warnings. Charlotte had spent twelve hours at the office, another evening convincing herself that exhaustion was simply the price of building a secure life for her daughter.

She expected silence.

Instead, she opened the front door and heard laughter.

Not ordinary laughter.

Celebratory laughter.

The smell reached her first.

Butter.

Garlic.

Old Bay seasoning.

Something expensive and oceanic.

She stepped into the dining room and stopped.

Gertrude sat at the center of the table, laughing with a glass of wine in her hand. Brandon was beside her. Hailey was filming something on her phone.

King crab legs covered the table.

Shrimp.

Lobster.

Sushi.

Oysters.

A bottle of champagne sat open near the centerpiece.

Charlotte's eyes moved slowly across the room.

Then she saw the receipt.

$1,247.83.

Her credit card number was printed beneath it.

For several seconds, nobody noticed her.

Then Hailey looked up.

Her smile vanished.

Gertrude stopped chewing.

Brandon stood.

"Charlotte."

She didn't answer.

Her eyes moved toward the kitchen.

There was one light on.

A small figure sat alone on a stool.

Skylar.

Eleven years old.

Her daughter was eating instant noodles from a paper cup.

No seafood.

No plate.

No chair at the table.

Just noodles.

Charlotte walked toward her.

"Sweetheart?"

Skylar looked up.

Her eyes immediately filled with tears.

"I'm sorry, Mom."

Charlotte crouched beside her.

"For what?"

"I wasn't supposed to eat their food."

Something inside Charlotte broke.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Something simply collapsed.

She looked back at the table.

Gertrude lifted her chin.

"She already ate earlier."

Charlotte looked at the cup.

Then at her daughter.

"Did you?"

Skylar shook her head.

Brandon rubbed his forehead.

"Charlotte, you're making a scene."

She stared at him.

"A scene?"

"Everyone's tired."

"She's hungry."

"Mom said—"

"Your mother isn't her parent."

Silence.

Charlotte helped Skylar finish the noodles.

Then she picked up the receipt.

She looked at the amount again.

$1,247.83.

The card had been hers.

The house was hers.

The money was hers.

And apparently, everyone at that table had decided those words meant nothing.

She didn't scream.

She didn't throw the receipt.

She simply folded it once.

Then again.

"Who authorized this?"

Nobody answered.

Charlotte looked at Brandon.

He looked away.

That was when she knew.

Something was wrong.

Much more wrong than dinner.
