Not because she was sorry.
Because she was afraid.
Charlotte stared at her.
"Were you going to pretend to be me?"
"No."
"Look at me."
Hailey couldn't.
"Were you?"
Silence.
Gertrude stepped forward.
"Stop bullying my daughter."
Charlotte laughed once.
"She has my identity."
Brandon entered.
"Everyone needs to calm down."
Charlotte turned toward him.
"What happens Friday?"
"Nothing."
"What was supposed to happen?"
"Estate planning."
Marcus raised an eyebrow.
"Estate planning doesn't usually require a fake government ID."
Brandon said nothing.
Later, outside the house, he grabbed Charlotte's arm.
Marcus immediately stepped between them.
Brandon released her.
"Mom got carried away."
"Mom?"
"She thought it would be easier."
"Easier to do what?"
He looked away.
"The fake ID wasn't supposed to be used."
"Then why make it?"
No answer.
Charlotte opened her car door.
Brandon struck the window with his palm.
"You are going to destroy this family over money."
Charlotte lowered the window two inches.
"No."
She looked him directly in the eyes.

"You destroyed this family over my money."
Then she drove away.
