Chapter 8 - THE VIDEO HAILEY SHOULD NEVER HAVE POSTEDBy Friday morning, Hailey had turned the family disaster into internet content.
She uploaded a nine-minute video.
She called Charlotte controlling.
Vindictive.
Financially abusive.
She claimed Gertrude had sacrificed everything for the family.
Then Hailey made the mistake that destroyed the story she was trying to create.
She included clips from the seafood dinner.
Gertrude laughing.
Brandon pouring wine.
Crab legs covering the table.
And Charlotte's daughter missing.
Then Brandon's voice came through the recording.
"Don't give Skylar any. Mom already handled her."
Charlotte downloaded the video.
Andrea did too.
So did Detective Morales.
By noon, strangers online were asking questions Hailey couldn't answer.
Why was the child eating alone?
Why did the family need Charlotte's card?
Why were they renovating a house that wasn't theirs?
Hailey deleted the video.
Too late.
The evidence existed.
That afternoon, Charlotte went to family court.
Temporary orders were issued.
Skylar would remain primarily with Charlotte.
Brandon's visitation would be structured.
Gertrude could not contact Skylar directly.
Charlotte received temporary exclusive use of the home.
When Gertrude protested, the judge silenced her.
Outside the courthouse, Skylar unexpectedly heard Gertrude arguing.
Then she said:
"You said Mom and I were guests in our own house."
Brandon froze.
"You laughed when Grandma said Mom worked like a dog."
Charlotte stared at her daughter.
Skylar's eyes filled.
"I'm sorry I didn't tell you."
Charlotte hugged her.
"You never apologize for telling me the truth."
That night, Charlotte changed every lock.
Every password.
Every access code.
For the first time, she slept in her own house.
But before midnight, Dana called.
"Charlotte, I found the refinance papers from six years ago."
The old paperwork was legitimate.
Then Dana found another document.
A marital property agreement.
Charlotte's name was on it.
She had never signed it.
And the notary name was the same.
Patricia Ellison.
The same notary connected to the new fraudulent documents.
