Charlotte hugged her.

That evening, they made grilled cheese.
Halfway through dinner, Skylar looked at the empty chair.
"Can we make a rule?"
"What rule?"
"No one eats alone in the kitchen."
Charlotte held out her pinky.
"Deal."
Their fingers linked.
For the first time, Charlotte understood the real victory.
It wasn't the house.
It wasn't the money.
It wasn't the arrests.
It was giving her daughter back a sense of belonging.
