Chapter 16 - THE GALA OF WHISPERS

Six months later. Gotham Hall, Manhattan.
The annual Wall Street Philanthropy Gala was in full swing. Crystal chandeliers cast brilliant light over hundreds of executives, politicians, and celebrities. Champagne flutes clinked, and string quartets played soft classical melodies in the background.
At the center of the grand ballroom stood Richard Sterling. He wore a perfectly tailored black tuxedo. Beside him was Vance, drinking sparkling water and looking relaxed for the first time in years.
"The board unanimously confirmed your full authority as Chairman and CEO this afternoon," Vance said softly over the noise of the crowd. "Sterling Capital has completely absorbed Harrison Group's liquid assets. We're stronger than we've ever been."
"And the trial?" Richard asked.

"David Harrison was sentenced to life without parole this morning at the federal courthouse," Vance replied. "Vanessa Vargas took a plea deal—fifteen years in a state penitentiary. She won't be coming back."
Richard took a slow breath, looking around the room at the powerful men and women who had once watched his fall with quiet amusement. Now, they looked at him with profound respect—and a healthy dose of fear.
