Chapter 2 - THE MONSTER IN THE HALLWAY“Richard, you’re misunderstanding this.”

Vanessa’s voice echoed in the cavernous, marble-tiled kitchen, laced with that perfectly practiced tone of calm authority. It was the same tone she used to dismiss waitstaff or negotiate charity gala tables.
Richard didn't turn around. He held Sophie tighter against his chest. She felt impossibly light. Her little bones pressed against his custom tailored suit, trembling like a trapped bird.
“Daddy,” Sophie whimpered, her face buried so deep in his neck he could feel her hot tears soaking his collar. “Don't let her take me. Please.”
“I've got you, baby,” Richard whispered, his voice dangerously low. “I've got you.”
He turned around slowly.
Vanessa was standing perfectly still, her hands clasped elegantly in front of her cream-colored blouse. But her eyes were calculating. She was a woman who always needed to control the narrative, and right now, the narrative was slipping from her manicured fingers.
“She’s having a tantrum, Richard,” Vanessa said, forcing a sympathetic smile. “She knocked over her water glass on the antique Persian rug in the foyer. I simply told her she needed a time-out. You know Dr. Heller recommended strict boundaries since Claire passed away. She’s testing you.”
Richard looked at the designer dog bowl on the floor. Then he looked at the traces of kibble still clinging to his daughter’s pale, quivering lips.
“A time-out,” Richard repeated, his voice eerily devoid of emotion.
“Yes. A time-out.” Vanessa took a step forward, reaching out a hand. “Come here, Sophie. Let Daddy go back to work. You know he has a big company to run.”
Sophie let out a muffled shriek and wrapped her legs around Richard’s waist, digging her nails into his jacket.
Richard’s gaze snapped to Vanessa. The look in his eyes made her stop dead in her tracks. Over the past year, Vanessa had known Richard Sterling as a grieving widow, an absent father, and a distracted CEO. She had never seen the man who ruthlessly dismantled rival corporations and crushed monopolies for sport.
She was seeing him now.
“If you take another step toward my daughter,” Richard said, every syllable dripping with ice, “I will make sure it is the last step you take in this house.”
Vanessa’s polite smile vanished. Her lips thinned into a hard line. “Richard. You are being hysterical. Are you really going to let a six-year-old child dictate the rules of this household? I am trying to raise her to be disciplined.”
“You starved her.”
“I delayed her lunch!” Vanessa snapped, her facade finally cracking. “She needs to learn respect! Ever since I moved in, she has done nothing but look at me with those creepy, dead eyes, acting like I’m a ghost. She needs to know who is in charge!”
Richard didn't yell. He didn't scream. He simply reached into his pocket with his free hand, pulled out his phone, and pressed a single button.
“Marcus,” Richard said quietly.
A voice immediately crackled through the speaker. “Yes, Mr. Sterling?”
Marcus was Richard’s head of security. An ex-Special Forces operative who operated out of the estate’s gatehouse and monitored the property like a military installation.
“Bring two men to the kitchen. Now.”
“On my way, sir.”
Vanessa’s face went completely white. “Richard? What are you doing?”
“You have exactly ten minutes to pack whatever fits into a single suitcase,” Richard said, walking past her toward the hallway. “Leave the jewelry. Leave the car keys. Leave anything I bought you.”
“You can’t do this!” Vanessa shrieked, her voice echoing off the high ceilings as she chased after him. “We are engaged, Richard! The wedding is in two months! You think you can just throw me out? The press will have a field day! I’ll tell them you’re unstable! I’ll tell them you’re abusing her!”
Richard stopped so abruptly Vanessa nearly ran into him. He turned his head just enough to look at her over his shoulder.
“Go to the press,” Richard whispered softly. “I dare you. I have more lawyers than you have pairs of shoes, Vanessa. By tomorrow morning, I can have your bank accounts frozen, your name blacklisted from every country club and charity board in America, and your life so thoroughly dismantled you’ll be begging for a job at a drive-thru. Do not test me.”
Heavy, synchronized footsteps echoed in the foyer. Marcus appeared in the doorway, flanked by two towering men in black suits.
“Mr. Sterling,” Marcus said, his eyes immediately assessing the situation, lingering for a fraction of a second on Sophie’s tear-stained face.
“Escort Ms. Cole to the master suite,” Richard ordered. “Give her ten minutes to pack a bag of basic clothing. Then escort her off the property. If she resists, call the police and have her arrested for trespassing.”
“Richard!” Vanessa screamed, pure venom flashing in her eyes as the guards moved toward her. “You need me! You don't know how to raise that brat! She’s broken!”
“Get her out of my sight,” Richard snarled.
He didn't look back as Vanessa’s screams devolved into curses. He carried Sophie out the front doors, into the crisp afternoon air, shielding her face from the wind. He walked straight to the black SUV parked in the driveway.
“Daddy?” Sophie whispered as he strapped her into her car seat.
“Yes, sweetie?”
“Are we going away?”
“We’re going to see a doctor,” Richard said gently, brushing the tangled hair out of her eyes. “And then we’re going to get the biggest cheeseburger in the city. How does that sound?”
Sophie didn't smile. She just looked at him with those enormous, haunted gray eyes.
“Is she going to be there when we get back?”
May you like
Richard felt a tear slip down his own cheek. He wiped it away quickly.
“No, Sophie,” he said, his voice breaking. “She is never, ever coming back. I promise.”
