Chapter 5 - THE BOARDROOM MASSACREThe lobby of Sterling Capital was a madhouse.

Paparazzi and financial journalists were swarming the glass doors, shouting questions and flashing cameras as Richard’s motorcade pulled up. Marcus and a dozen security guards formed a human wall, forcing a path through the chaotic crowd.
Richard stepped out of the Maybach. He didn't wear a tie. His jacket was open. He looked less like a corporate titan and more like a man going to war.
In his arms, he carried Sophie.
She was dressed in a pristine white dress, clutching her teddy bear, her face buried safely in Richard’s neck. He kept a protective hand cupped over the back of her head, shielding her from the blinding flashes of the cameras.
“Mr. Sterling! Is it true you violently assaulted your fiancée?” “Richard! What about the board vote?” “Are you stepping down as CEO?”
Richard ignored them all, striding through the lobby and straight into the private elevator. The doors slid shut, cutting off the noise.
In the quiet of the elevator, Sophie peeked up. “Daddy, are those people mad at us?”
“No, sweetheart,” Richard said softly, kissing her forehead. “They’re just loud. But they can’t touch you. You’re safe with me. Remember the plan?”
Sophie nodded slowly. “I sit with Mr. Marcus in the big chair. And I draw with my new crayons.”
“That’s right. And I’ll be right next to you the whole time.”
When the elevator doors opened on the 38th floor, the atmosphere was thick with tension. The executive assistants stopped typing. The silence was deafening. Richard walked straight down the glass-walled corridor toward the main boardroom.
He pushed the heavy double doors open.
Twelve of the most powerful men and women in American finance sat around the massive oak table. At the far end, looking smug and perfectly composed, sat Arthur Vance, a senior board member and a man Richard had long suspected of plotting against him.
And sitting right next to Arthur, wearing a conservative black dress and dabbing her eyes with a tissue, was Vanessa.
Richard stopped in the doorway. The temperature in the room seemed to drop ten degrees.
“Richard,” Arthur said, clearing his throat and attempting a tone of grave concern. “I see you got my message. We felt it was necessary to invite Vanessa to this emergency meeting, given the... troubling allegations in the press this morning.”
Vanessa looked up, playing the perfect victim. “Richard. Please. I just want to help you get the psychiatric help you need.”
Richard didn't say a word. He walked to the head of the table. He set Sophie gently down in the large, leather CEO chair. Marcus immediately stepped up behind her, standing like a gargoyle, while placing a fresh box of crayons and a drawing pad on the table.
“Daddy’s right here,” Richard whispered to her. Then he turned to face the board.
“What is the meaning of this, Richard?” a female board member demanded. “You brought a child to a crisis meeting?”
“This isn't a crisis meeting,” Richard said, his voice echoing off the glass walls. “It’s an extermination.”
He pulled a small flash drive from his pocket and tossed it onto the center of the table. It slid and hit Vanessa’s coffee cup with a sharp clink.
“Arthur,” Richard said, locking eyes with the older man. “You’ve been trying to push me out for three years. You saw the article Vanessa leaked this morning, and you thought you finally had your silver bullet to trigger a morality clause and vote me out.”
Arthur bristled. “The company’s reputation is at stake! You are acting erratically!”
“I’m acting exactly how a father should act when he discovers a predator in his home,” Richard snapped. He pointed to the flash drive. “On that drive is the police report filed this morning by Dr. Sarah Evans at Mount Sinai Hospital. It details severe malnutrition and physical bruising on my six-year-old daughter.”
A ripple of shock went through the board members. Vanessa’s smug expression faltered. She sat up straighter. “He’s lying! He forced the doctor to write that!”
“Also on that drive,” Richard continued, his voice rising, drowning her out, “are high-definition photos of a cedar storage closet in my attic. Complete with a broken padlock, a urine-stained blanket, and hundreds of fingernail scratch marks on the inside of the door.”
Two board members audibly gasped. All eyes turned to Vanessa, who suddenly looked very pale.
“It’s a frame job!” Vanessa shrieked, slamming her hands on the table. “He’s trying to ruin me because I left him!”
“And finally,” Richard said softly, pulling out his phone. “I have this.”
He tapped a button. The large projector screen at the back of the boardroom hummed to life.
“Vanessa thought she disabled the security cameras in my home,” Richard explained to the horrified board. “She didn't realize that my security chief, Marcus, had installed a secondary, hidden hard drive after my late wife passed away.”
The screen flickered, showing black-and-white night-vision footage. It was the hallway outside the attic.
The timestamp in the corner read Tuesday, 11:42 PM.
The video was silent, but the visual was damning. It showed Vanessa, wearing a silk robe, dragging a screaming, thrashing Sophie by the arm up the stairs. The child was fighting desperately, trying to anchor her feet to the carpet. Vanessa viciously slapped the little girl across the face, unlocking the cedar door, and violently shoving her inside before locking the padlock and walking away without a backward glance.
The silence in the boardroom was absolute. Someone was softly crying. It was the female board member. Arthur Vance looked physically ill.
Vanessa was hyperventilating, staring at the screen in pure terror. The mask was completely gone.
Richard walked slowly around the table until he was standing directly behind Vanessa’s chair. He leaned down, his mouth inches from her ear.
“I told you I was going to dismantle your life,” Richard whispered so only she could hear. “This is just the appetizer.”
He stood up and looked at the board. “The press is downstairs. I am going down there in five minutes to release this video to every news network on the planet. By noon, Vanessa Cole will be the most hated woman in America. And anyone sitting at this table who tries to defend her, or use this situation to leverage my company, will be publicly named as her accomplice.”
He locked eyes with Arthur. “Do we need to hold a vote of no confidence, Arthur? Or are we in agreement that I remain exactly where I am?”
Arthur swallowed hard, wiping sweat from his brow. “No vote needed, Richard. You... you have our full support.”
Richard nodded once. He turned to Marcus. “Call the police. Have Ms. Cole arrested for felony child abuse and false imprisonment.”
“Richard, please!” Vanessa screamed, throwing herself out of the chair, trying to grab his arm. “I’m sorry! I was stressed! I wasn't in my right mind! Don't do this to me!”
Richard casually stepped back, letting her fall to her knees on the expensive carpet. He looked down at her with absolute disgust.
“You’re right, Vanessa,” Richard said coldly. “Bad girls don't get treats.”

He turned his back on her, walking over to Sophie, who was happily coloring a picture of a blue dog. He scooped her up in his arms, ignoring Vanessa’s hysterical sobbing as two security guards entered the room to detain her until the police arrived.
“Come on, sweetie,” Richard said, smiling at his daughter for the first time in days. “Let’s go get that cheeseburger.”
