Chapter 4 - THE BILLIONAIRE’S WRATHBy 6:00 AM the next morning, the Sterling Estate had been transformed into a war room.

Four men in sharp suits sat around the massive mahogany dining table. Laptops hummed. Mountains of financial documents and background checks were stacked in neat piles. At the head of the table sat Vance, Richard’s ruthless corporate attorney, sipping a black espresso.

Richard paced the length of the room. He hadn't slept a single minute. He had showered, put on a sharp charcoal suit, and tied a Windsor knot with frightening precision.

“Talk to me, Vance,” Richard barked.

Vance adjusted his glasses. “We’ve been digging into Vanessa’s background all night, Richard. Her resume was flawless. Top of her class at Columbia, successful stint in PR, glowing recommendations. But it was entirely fabricated.”

Richard stopped pacing. “Explain.”

A man sitting next to Vance—a hacker named Elias—turned his laptop around. “Her real name isn't Vanessa Cole. It’s Vanessa Vargas. She changed her name legally seven years ago after a scandal in Chicago. She was a personal assistant to a real estate mogul named Thomas Hallowell. Hallowell’s wife suddenly died of a 'heart attack'. Six months later, Vanessa was engaged to him.”

Richard’s blood ran cold. Claire. His wife, Claire, had died of a sudden, unexplained cardiac event fourteen months ago. She was perfectly healthy. The doctors had called it a tragic, freak occurrence.

“Where is Hallowell now?” Richard asked, his voice deathly quiet.

“That’s the interesting part,” Vance said grimly. “He suffered a severe stroke a month before their wedding. He’s in a vegetative state in a private facility. Vanessa inherited his entire estate as his proxy. But she blew through it in three years. Bad investments, gambling, a taste for high art. She was broke when she met you at that charity gala, Richard.”

“She’s a predator,” Richard breathed. “A professional parasite.”

“Worse,” Elias chimed in, clicking a button. “We accessed the encrypted files on the laptop she left behind. Richard... she wasn't just abusing Sophie for fun. She was trying to break her psychologically so you would send her away to a boarding school or a psychiatric facility. She was searching online for 'how to declare a minor legally incompetent' and researching long-term residential institutions.”

The dining room went dead silent.

Vanessa’s plan became horrifyingly clear. Isolate the child. Make her seem crazy and unmanageable. Force Richard to institutionalize his only heir, leaving Vanessa as the sole emotional support and, eventually, the sole beneficiary of the Sterling empire.

And Claire. Did she kill Claire to create the vacancy?

Before Richard could process the implications, Vance’s phone buzzed aggressively. He glanced at the screen, and his face drained of color.

“Richard.” Vance turned the phone to him. “Look at this.”

It was an alert from the Wall Street Journal.

STERLING CAPITAL CEO IN MENTAL BREAKDOWN? SOURCES SAY BILLIONAIRE RICHARD STERLING HAS SUFFERED A PSYCHOTIC BREAK, EVICTING FIANCÉE IN VIOLENT RAMPAGE.

The article was brutal. It quoted an “anonymous source close to the family”—clearly Vanessa—claiming Richard had lost his mind with grief, was refusing to let his daughter attend school, and had violently assaulted her the previous afternoon. It even included a leaked, out-of-context audio clip of Richard yelling, “I will make sure it is the last step you take!”

Richard stared at the screen. The stock ticker at the bottom of the page showed Sterling Capital shares plummeting by 6% in pre-market trading.

“She’s striking first,” Vance said urgently. “She knows you have the resources to crush her, so she’s going public. She wants to paint you as an unstable, abusive lunatic before you can expose what she did to Sophie.”

“Can we issue a denial?” Marcus asked.

“A denial looks weak,” Vance replied. “Richard, you have an emergency board meeting at 9:00 AM today to approve the LexCorp acquisition. The board is already skittish. If they see this article, they might call a vote of no confidence. They could strip you of your CEO title by lunchtime.”

Richard looked out the massive bay windows toward the sprawling lawns. The morning sun was just breaking over the trees. He thought of the scratch marks on the cedar door. He thought of Sophie, currently sleeping safely upstairs, clutching the ridiculous teddy bear he had brought home.

Vanessa thought she was playing chess. She thought she could outmaneuver him in the press and the boardroom.

She forgot that Richard didn't play chess. He flipped the board and burned the pieces.

“Vance,” Richard said, his voice terrifyingly calm. “Draft a press release. Call a full press conference for 10:00 AM at the Sterling Capital lobby.”

“Richard, a press conference? Without a PR strategy?”

“I have a strategy,” Richard said, turning back to the table. His eyes were burning with a dark, untamed fire. “Marcus. Get the cars ready. We are going to the office. And I’m taking Sophie with me.”

Vance gaped. “You’re bringing the child? Richard, the press will eat her alive!”

“The press is going to see exactly what I want them to see,” Richard said, walking toward the door. “A father protecting his daughter from a monster. Vanessa wants a public execution? Fine. But she’s the one putting her head in the guillotine.”
