Where the burnt-out shell of Vance Hardware once stood, a massive, state-of-the-art facility had risen from the ashes. Sleek glass, dark steel, and solar-paneled roofs stretched across three acres.
A giant illuminated sign above the entrance read: VANCE TECH & INFRASTRUCTURE SYSTEMS.
The city of Phoenix had awarded our firm the sole contract to overhaul the structural monitoring systems for the entire metro area.
I stood on the second-floor balcony overlooking the bustling shop floor below. Dozens of young engineers, technicians, and fabricators were working on automated assembly lines, building the next generation of life-saving smart sensors.
David Vance walked up beside me, holding two glasses of sparkling apple cider. He handed one to me.
"Not bad for a girl from a Mesa hardware store," David teased with a warm smile.
