Chapter 9 - Smoke Over MesaThe victory was short-lived.

At 3:15 AM, my phone erupted with frantic alarms from our shop’s automated system. I sprinted out of my bedroom, grabbing my truck keys, my blood running cold.
When I arrived at the Mesa industrial park, the night sky was painted an apocalyptic orange.
Plumes of black, suffocating smoke poured into the air. Vance Hardware & Systems was engulfed in a wall of towering flames. Three fire engines were already on the scene, sirens wailing, firemen desperately dragging hoses across the asphalt.
"Dad!" I screamed, throwing my truck into park and sprinting toward the perimeter tape. "Dad!"
"Ma'am, stay back!" a firefighter yelled, grabbing my arm.
"My father! Is he inside?!"
Through the haze of smoke and flashing red lights, I saw a paramedic team rolling a stretcher toward an ambulance. Thomas was sitting up, an oxygen mask strapped to his face, his arms covered in soot, coughing violently.
I broke free from the firefighter and ran to his side, tears blinding my eyes. "Dad! Oh God, Dad!"
Thomas pulled down his mask, his eyes red and tearing from the smoke. "They... they threw something through the window, Ana... Molotov cocktails... the whole workshop... forty years of work..."
I looked past him at the burning building. The roof collapsed with a deafening crash, shooting a geyser of sparks forty feet into the desert night.
Everything was gone. The tools, the inventory, the historical blueprints, my father's life work.
Standing in the heat of the fire, the black ash settling onto my hair and skin, my grief suddenly vanished. It burned away, replaced by a cold, crystalline, unstoppable rage.
