Chapter 7 - The Grand Jury SurpriseBy dawn, news cameras lined the street outside Vance Hardware. Two Maricopa County Sheriff cruisers sat parked at the front gate, their red and blue lights flashing against the morning desert sky. Callan Harrington was led out in handcuffs, his expensive hoodie torn, his face pale as chalk as reporters screamed questions from behind the police line.

"Mr. Harrington! Did you break into your wife's property?!" "Callan! Are the corporate fraud allegations true?!"

Callan said nothing, ducking his head into the back of the patrol car.

Four hours later, I sat in a high-floor conference room at the Phoenix District Attorney's office. Assistant DA Elena Ruiz—a sharp, uncompromising prosecutor known for taking down corrupt politicians—sat across from David Vance and me.

"We've dropped all preliminary charges against you, Anastasia," Ruiz said, pushing a thick document across the desk. "In fact, the Grand Jury just returned an indictment against Callan Harrington for felony aggravated stalking, burglary, and filing false police reports."

"What about the construction fraud?" I asked directly.

Ruiz tapped her pen against the glass table. "That's where things get complicated. The Harringtons hold massive political sway in this city. The Maricopa County Building Inspection Board is refusing to issue a cease-and-desist order for the Scottsdale Waterfront project without hard physical proof that the concrete is failing."

"I can give you the proof," I said.

Ruiz raised an eyebrow. "How? The Harrington estate has armed private security guarding the waterfront construction site 24/7. No independent engineer can get close enough to pull core samples."

I pulled out my tablet and opened a CAD blueprint of the foundation.

"They don't need to pull core samples," I said with a cold grin. "My father's company installed the wireless sub-level transceivers six weeks ago before we were kicked off the site. The hardware is already embedded deep inside the concrete pillars. All I need is ten minutes near the site perimeter with a high-gain directional antenna to scrape the diagnostic data."

Ruiz smiled—a sharp, lethal expression. "Get me those numbers, Anastasia. And I'll tear their empire down."
