Chapter 3 - The Cold Marble of Paradise ValleyThe Maricopa County Superior Courtroom was bathed in harsh fluorescent light. Sitting at the prosecution table, the Harringtons' lead defense counsel, a slick fifty-something attorney named Harrison Vance (no relation to David), stood with his chin tilted upward, practically radiating arrogance.

"Your Honor," Harrison boomed, his voice echoing off the wood paneling. "The Harrington family represents the absolute bedrock of Scottsdale’s business community. The defendant, Anastasia Vance, exhibited unprovoked, psychotic violence against her husband, Mr. Callan Harrington. We demand bail be set at no less than two million dollars, alongside a full restraining order."

Judge Evelyn Thorne, a stern woman with silver hair, looked over her spectacles at David. "Defense counsel? What is your response?"

David didn't raise his voice. He simply walked to the center podium, carrying an encrypted flash drive.

"Your Honor, we submit Defense Exhibit A: raw, unedited, cloud-backed security footage from the Harrington kitchen at the exact minute of the incident, captured by an independent secondary server."

Harrison’s eyes narrowed. "Objection! The estate's security system was offline for routine maintenance!"

"The primary system was," David corrected smoothly, turning to smile at Harrison. "The backup was not."

David plugged the drive into the court monitor. The entire room—the judge, the bailiffs, the press seated in the gallery—watched as the video played. The brutal slap. Brooklyn's deliberate shove. Callan's clumsy, self-inflicted accident.

When the video ended, the courtroom was deathly quiet. You could hear the faint hum of the air conditioning.

Judge Thorne’s face turned to stone. She looked directly at Harrison, then down at the police reports signed by the Harringtons.

"Bail is granted on personal recognizance," Judge Thorne declared, slamming her gavel down with a crack that sounded like thunder. "The defendant is released immediately. Furthermore, I am referring the witness statements of Melissa, Brooklyn, and Richard Harrington to the District Attorney's office for immediate investigation into filing a false police report and perjury."

I walked out of the courtroom fifteen minutes later, stepping into the blinding Arizona sunlight. Resting on the courthouse steps stood Callan Harrington, his jaw wrapped in pristine medical gauze, flanked by his mother, Melissa, dressed in a $5,000 Chanel suit.

Melissa stepped into my path, her eyes burning with pure, unadulterated venom.

"You think a little video makes you clever, Anastasia?" Melissa hissed, her voice low enough that the reporters twenty yards away couldn't hear. "You came from nothing. Your father's business is one bad credit review away from bankruptcy. We will crush you."

I stopped an inch from her, looking down at the woman who had treated me like a servant for three years.

"Check your stock ticker, Melissa," I murmured softly. "I leaked the video to the press five minutes ago."
