Chapter 2 - Ashes of the Empire

The fiery explosion in the rose garden lit the ruined foyer in a violent, dancing orange hue. Smoke poured through the shattered stained-glass windows, carrying the acrid stench of burning fuel and cordite. Outside, the alarms continued their incessant siren song, but inside the mansion, a sudden, heavy stillness fell.
Victoria dropped to her knees on the marble floor, her expensive gown ruined, her mascara running in dark streaks down her pale face. She stared at Julian in absolute terror. The man standing before her wasn't just a billionaire corporate titan; he was a silent monster who had calculated every move three steps ahead of everyone else.
"You... you knew," Victoria whimpered, clutching her chest. "All of it. You let me think I was winning."
Julian didn't answer right away. He calmly lowered the silver sidearm, engaged the safety, and slipped it back into his tailored leather holster beneath his suit jacket. His dark eyes remained completely devoid of warmth.
"I gave you every opportunity to be a mother and a wife, Victoria," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly calm amid the devastation. "You chose power over family. You chose treason."
The sound of footsteps echoed from the subterranean access door. Maria stepped into the foyer, cradling baby Leo safely in a tactical sling against her chest. She had discarded her stained nanny apron, revealing a tight, black Kevlar tactical suit beneath. Her posture was no longer that of a timid servant; she stood tall, sharp, and commanding—Commander Maria Cole, former elite operative and Julian’s chief of private security.
"The perimeter is secure, Sir," Maria reported, her voice brisk and professional. "The second strike team outside has been neutralized by our sniper units. Baby Leo is completely unharmed. His vital signs are normal."
Julian turned, his hardened expression softening for a fraction of a second as he looked at his baby boy. Leo was fast asleep, oblivious to the war that had just played out above his head. Julian reached out a thumb, gently brushing the infant's soft cheek.
"Thank you, Maria," Julian murmured.
Victoria let out a bitter, hysterical scream. "She tricked you, Julian! She’s just a mercenary! She’s taking your money just like Marcus was!"
Maria didn't even blink. She glanced down at Victoria with cold pity. "I’ve worked for Mr. Vance for seven years, Victoria. Long before you seduced your way into his estate. My loyalty isn't for sale. Yours was just cheap."
Heavy boots pounded against the driveway outside as black armored vans slid to a stop in front of the estate. Julian’s private tactical team swarmed the entrance, securing the crime scene with military efficiency. Two female operatives approached Victoria, hoisting her up by her arms.
"Take her to the safehouse in Sector 4," Julian ordered, not looking back as his wife was dragged away sobbing. "Keep her alive. The police will not be involved until I find out who gave Marcus the authorization codes to my private servers. Marcus was a coward; he didn't act alone."
Maria stepped closer to Julian, tapping a holographic tablet on her wrist. A stream of encrypted data illuminated her face. "He didn't act alone, Julian. Look at this. Five minutes before the breach, Marcus received an encrypted satellite ping from an offshore bank in Zurich. The funds were authorized by an entity called 'The Apex Syndicate'."
Julian’s jaw tightened. "The Apex Syndicate... That was my late brother Alexander’s network."
"Alexander has been dead for three years, Julian," Maria reminded him softly. "His plane crashed in the Swiss Alps."

Julian stared into the burning wreckage in his rose garden, his eyes narrowing into cold slits of steel.
"In our world, Maria," Julian whispered, "a body is only dead if you burn it yourself. Clear the house. We’re moving to the safehouse tonight. The war has just begun."
