Chapter 16 - THE FIRE Smoke filled the hallway.
Perrin was separated from us.
I heard him scream.
“Dad!”
I ran.
A beam collapsed between us.
Serena screamed his name.
“Perrin!”
I crawled through smoke.
My hands burned.
The ceiling groaned.
Then I found him.
He was trapped beneath a wooden beam.
“I've got you.”
“Daddy, don't leave me.”
“Never.”
I lifted the beam with everything I had.
Serena reached us.
Together we pulled Perrin free.
Behind us, flames consumed the hallway.
Victor disappeared into the smoke.
We escaped seconds before the building collapsed.
For the first time in three years, Serena held both of us.
