Chapter 6 - THE ROOM UNDER THE STAIRS A search of my own house revealed something we had missed.

The hidden service corridor extended farther than the room where Perrin had been found.
Behind another panel was a narrow staircase.
It led downward.
At the bottom was a concrete room.
Inside were old surveillance monitors.
One still worked.
The screen flickered.
Then displayed footage.
Perrin.
Sleeping.
Three nights earlier.
Someone had installed a camera inside his bedroom.
I felt sick.
The next screen showed Rhea entering the house.
Then another woman.
I couldn't see her face.
She carried a folder.
Ellis paused the footage.
“Who is that?”
I didn't know.
Then the woman turned slightly.
A scar crossed the side of her neck.
And I recognized the coat.
It belonged to Adrian Vale.
The woman wasn't Adrian.
She was someone working for him.
On the desk beside the monitor was a handwritten list.
Names.
Dates.
Payments.
One name appeared repeatedly.
RHEA MORGAN.
Under it:
Maintain access to Kiernan residence.
I stared at the screen.
May you like
Rhea hadn't simply been my fiancée.
She had been planted in my life.
