Chapter 19 - THE LETTER Six months later, an envelope arrived.

No return address.
I almost threw it away.
Then I saw the handwriting.
Serena recognized it.
“That's Adrian's.”
Adrian Vale had been dead.
The envelope contained one page.
A confession.
But there was one sentence that changed everything.
Victor Hale was not the beginning.
Beneath it was another name.
Someone we had never heard before.
Someone who had financed the entire operation.
At the bottom was a final message:
If you're reading this, they know Serena survived.
I looked at Serena.
She looked at me.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then Perrin ran into the room.
“Dad!”
I folded the letter.
“What's wrong?”
He pointed toward the front gate.
“There is someone outside.”
I looked through the window.
A woman stood across the street.
She wasn't approaching.
She was simply watching the house.
Then she turned.
And walked away.
Serena whispered:
“Kiernan…”
“I saw her.”
“Who is she?”
I didn't know.

But I knew one thing.
Our story wasn't finished.
