Chapter 20 - WHEN THE WALL OPENS AGAIN Two years passed.

Life became ordinary again.

Or at least, ordinary enough.

Perrin was six now.

He had lost his fear of dark rooms.

He had stopped waking from nightmares.

Serena had learned how to laugh without looking over her shoulder.

And I had learned something I never expected.

Sometimes healing wasn't about forgetting what happened.

It was about building a life bigger than the memory.

On a warm summer evening, we sat together in the backyard.

Perrin was chasing fireflies.

Serena leaned against my shoulder.

“Do you ever think about that night?” she asked.

“Every day.”

“So do I.”

She squeezed my hand.

“But I don't regret coming home.”

Neither did I.

Then Perrin ran toward us.

“Mom! Dad!”

He was holding something.

An old brass key.

“Where did you get that?”

He pointed toward the house.

“The library.”

My stomach tightened.

We followed him inside.

He led us to the former hidden room.

The wall had been rebuilt years earlier.

There was no secret passage anymore.

Or so we thought.

Perrin inserted the brass key into a tiny hole beneath the molding.

The panel clicked.

Serena grabbed my arm.

The wall slowly opened.

Behind it was darkness.

But this time there was no crying.

No frightened child.

No hidden prisoner.

Only a small wooden box.

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Serena stared at it.

Her face changed.

The photograph showed her mother.

Young.

Standing beside another woman.

The same woman we had seen outside our house two years earlier.

On the back was a handwritten sentence:

SERENA WAS NEVER THE ONLY ONE THEY HID.

We looked at each other.

Perrin looked between us.

“Is someone else in trouble?”

Serena knelt beside him.

“Maybe.”

Perrin frowned.

“Are we going to help her?”

I looked at Serena.

She looked at me.

We both smiled.

“Yes,” I said.

“We're going to help her.”

Outside, the first stars appeared over the roof.

The house was quiet.

The old wall stood open behind us.

For three years, a wall had hidden a terrible secret.

Then it had hidden the truth.

Now, for the first time, it was opening to something else.

A choice.

A new beginning.

And somewhere beyond the darkness, someone was waiting to be found.

I took Serena's hand.

She took Perrin's.

Together, we stepped toward the open doorway.

This time, none of us was afraid.

Because the secret behind the wall had once torn our family apart.

But the truth had brought us back together.

And whatever waited on the other side…

We would face it together.
