Chapter 11 - The ArchiveThe federal archive stood beneath an abandoned courthouse.

No signs.
No guards.
No public entrance.
Daniel and Ruiz entered through a service tunnel.
Inside, rows of steel cabinets stretched into darkness.
Ruiz entered a code.
A door opened.
Daniel stepped inside.
“Where are the files on the Mercer organization?”
Ruiz pointed.
“Vault Seven.”
They reached it.
Locked.
Daniel held up the brass key.
It opened.
Inside was one file.
Only one.
PROJECT MERCER.
Daniel opened it.
The first page showed his birth certificate.
The second showed photographs from childhood.
The third showed medical records.
Then a photograph of Daniel at seventeen.
Standing beside Marcus Hale.
Behind them stood Charles Mercer.
And Vanessa.
Daniel looked at the date.
One week before his father's supposed death.
He turned the page.
PHASE FOUR COMPLETE.
Then:
SUBJECT SUCCESSFULLY INTEGRATED INTO PUBLIC SYSTEM.
Daniel stared.
“What does that mean?”
Ruiz didn't answer.
Daniel turned another page.
A list of names.
Politicians.
Judges.
Doctors.
Executives.
Then one name circled in red.
Dr. Samuel Miller.
Daniel's eyes widened.
“The surgeon.”
Ruiz nodded.
“He wasn't trying to kill Chloe.”
“What was he doing?”
“Removing the implant.”
Daniel looked at him.
“Then who stopped him?”
Ruiz stared at the file.
“Someone who wanted the implant intact.”
The lights went out.
A voice echoed through the vault.
“You're finally beginning to understand.”
Daniel spun around.
Marcus stepped from the shadows.
Ruiz raised his gun.
Marcus laughed.
“Put it down.”
Daniel aimed at him.
“You killed my mother.”
“No.”
“You ordered it.”
“No.”
“Then who did?”
Marcus looked at the ceiling.
“The fifth.”
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“Who?”
Marcus walked closer.
“You.”
Daniel froze.
Marcus continued.
“You built the organization.”
“No.”
“At seventeen, you discovered what your father had done.”
Daniel stared.
“You were brilliant.”
Marcus smiled.
“You created a counter-system.”
“The second ledger.”
“Yes.”
“You erased your own memories.”
“Yes.”
Daniel felt dizzy.
“Why?”
“Because you knew they would torture you for the information.”
Marcus lowered his weapon.
“You trusted no one.”
Daniel looked at him.
“Not even myself.”
“Exactly.”
Marcus stepped closer.
“Then you met Chloe.”
Daniel's expression softened.
“She changed you.”
“She became your weakness.”
“No.”
“She became your reason to fight.”
Marcus smiled.
“That is why they took her.”
Daniel looked toward the door.
“Where is she?”
Marcus pointed behind him.
A steel door opened.
Chloe stood there.
Alive.
Daniel rushed toward her.
They embraced.
“I thought I lost you.”
Chloe whispered:
“Not yet.”
Marcus watched them.
Then he said:
“The original ledger is not a book.”
Daniel turned.
“What?”
“It is a person.”
Chloe slowly looked at Daniel.
Marcus nodded.
“It's inside you.”
Daniel's eyes widened.
A memory surfaced.
His father.
A needle.
A voice.
We'll put the ledger where nobody can steal it.
Daniel touched his temple.
“No…”
Chloe grabbed his hand.
“What is it?”
Daniel whispered:
“My memories aren't memories.”
He looked at Marcus.
“They're the ledger.”
Marcus smiled.
“Now you understand.”
Then the archive doors slammed shut.
And every file cabinet opened at once.
May you like
Thousands of documents spilled onto the floor.
Every document carried Daniel's signature.
