Chapter 19 - The Final ChoiceCharles led them into a room.

At its center was a computer.

One chair.

One screen.

On the screen:

THE MERCER PROTOCOL.

Charles spoke quietly.

“You can erase every record.”

Daniel stared.

“Or?”

“Activate everything.”

“What happens if I activate it?”

“Every secret becomes public.”

“Good.”

“Millions of innocent people will be harmed.”

Daniel froze.

Charles continued.

“Banks collapse.”

“Governments fall.”

“Markets crash.”

“Wars may begin.”

Daniel looked at Chloe.

Charles smiled.

“You wanted justice.”

“This is justice.”

“No.”

Charles shook his head.

“This is revenge.”

Daniel stared at the system.

“What happens if I erase it?”

“The world survives.”

“And you?”

“I disappear.”

Daniel looked at his father.

“You'd sacrifice yourself?”

Charles smiled.

“I've sacrificed everyone.”

Silence.

Daniel approached the terminal.

His hand hovered over the keyboard.

Chloe stood beside him.

“You don't have to become him.”

Daniel looked at her.

“What if exposing the truth hurts millions?”

“Then find another way.”

Daniel thought about his mother.

His father.

Marcus.

Vanessa.

Everyone destroyed by secrets.

He opened the second ledger.

A new idea formed.

He could release the evidence selectively.

Enough to destroy the organization.

Not enough to destroy innocent lives.

He began typing.

Charles stared.

“What are you doing?”

“Choosing.”

Daniel uploaded the evidence.

Not everything.

Only verified crimes.

Only names tied directly to the organization.

Only financial records that proved corruption.

The system began shutting down.

Charles looked at him.

“You've become better than me.”

Daniel turned.

“No.”

He looked at Chloe.

“She made me better.”

Charles smiled.

Then alarms sounded.

Vanessa ran into the room.

“We have thirty seconds!”

Daniel looked around.

“Until what?”

“The facility self-destructs.”

Charles laughed.

“You see?”

He pressed a button.

Doors locked.

Daniel grabbed Chloe.

“Move!”

They ran.

Vanessa followed.

Ruiz shouted from the corridor.

“Daniel!”

They reached the exit.

An explosion rocked the building.

Daniel fell.

Chloe pulled him up.

They ran outside.

The facility erupted behind them.

Fire rose into the night.

Daniel turned.

His father was gone.

No body.

No proof.

Only ashes.

Chloe stood beside him.

“Is it over?”

Daniel looked at the burning building.

“No.”

He smiled faintly.

“But it's different now.”

His phone buzzed.

A final message.

YOU CHOSE CORRECTLY.

Daniel stared.

“Who sent that?”

Chloe looked at him.

“Maybe someone watching.”

May you like

Daniel put the phone away.

For the first time, he wasn't afraid.
