Chapter 12 - The Memory VaultDaniel stared at the papers.

His handwriting.
His signature.
His secrets.
Everything.
Ruiz picked up one file.
“This can't be real.”
Daniel took it.
Inside was a map.
Coordinates.
Names.
Bank accounts.
Murder investigations.
Political operations.
Every crime the organization had committed.
And beside each one:
APPROVED: DANIEL MERCER.
Daniel felt sick.
“I didn't do this.”
Marcus stood across the room.
“You did.”
“No.”
“You ordered the operations.”
“I was seventeen.”
“You were trained since childhood.”
Daniel looked at Chloe.
She was crying.
“I believe you.”
Daniel stared at her.
“You knew?”
“I remembered.”
“When?”
“Tonight.”
Daniel's heart broke.
“What else do you remember?”
Chloe took a breath.
“Your father gave me the third ledger.”
“Where?”
“Inside your wedding ring.”
Daniel looked at her hand.
She removed the ring.
Inside was a tiny compartment.
Empty.
Daniel looked at Marcus.
“Where is it?”
Marcus smiled.
“You already have it.”
Daniel touched his wedding ring.
His expression changed.
He understood.
The third ledger wasn't physical.
It was encoded in the ring's metal.
His father had hidden the information in something Daniel would never suspect.
His marriage.
His wife.
His commitment.
The very thing the organization could never understand.
Love.
Daniel looked at Chloe.
“You saved me.”
She shook her head.
“We saved each other.”
A loud explosion shook the archive.
Marcus looked alarmed.
“They're here.”
“Who?”
“The fifth.”
Daniel raised his weapon.
“Then let them come.”
The vault doors exploded.
Armed men flooded inside.
Gunfire erupted.
Ruiz returned fire.
Chloe ducked behind a desk.
Daniel moved between her and the attackers.
One man charged.
Daniel disarmed him.
Another fired.
Marcus took the bullet.
He fell.
Daniel caught him.
“Why?”
Marcus coughed.
“Because… you were my brother.”
Daniel stared.
Marcus smiled weakly.
“I never stopped being your friend.”
Then Marcus died.
Daniel closed his eyes.
Chloe grabbed his arm.
“Daniel.”
He looked up.
A woman stood in the doorway.
Gray hair.
Elegant black suit.
Calm eyes.
Daniel recognized her immediately.
Evelyn Holloway.
The woman from the photograph.
She looked at Daniel.
“Hello, Subject Five.”
Daniel raised his gun.
“Why did you kill my mother?”
Evelyn smiled.
“Because she remembered.”
“Remembered what?”
“That you were never meant to survive.”
Daniel's expression hardened.
“What are you?”
Evelyn stepped closer.
“The woman who raised your father.”
Daniel froze.
“What?”
“I was there when Charles became a Mercer.”
She looked at Chloe.
“And I was there when Chloe was selected.”
Chloe stared.
“I was?”
“Yes.”
Evelyn smiled.
“Your marriage wasn't accidental.”
Daniel felt his blood turn cold.
“You brought us together.”
“Of course.”
“Why?”
“To activate the ledger.”
Daniel looked at Chloe.
She suddenly remembered.
A hospital.
A newborn baby.
A young woman.
A promise.
Then she whispered:
“I was part of the experiment too.”
Evelyn smiled.
“Now you're both complete.”
The lights went out.
When they returned—
May you like
Evelyn was gone.
So was Chloe.
