Chapter 22 - The Last SecretTimes Square was crowded.

Lights.

Music.

Tourists.

Millions of people.

Daniel stood in the center.

Chloe beside him.

Marcus waited across the street.

Henry stayed behind.

Then the crowd parted.

Charles Mercer walked toward them.

Alive.

Older.

But smiling.

Daniel raised his weapon.

Charles stopped.

“Put it away.”

“You lied.”

“Yes.”

“You killed people.”

“Yes.”

“You destroyed our family.”

“Yes.”

Daniel's voice shook.

“Why?”

Charles looked at Chloe.

“Because I believed the world needed to be controlled.”

Daniel shook his head.

“You were wrong.”

Charles smiled.

“I know.”

That answer surprised Daniel.

Charles reached into his coat.

He pulled out a small black box.

“The final ledger.”

Daniel stared.

“What's inside?”

“Everything.”

“Why give it to me?”

“Because I failed.”

Daniel didn't move.

Charles opened the box.

Inside was a small device.

A single red button.

“Press it.”

“What happens?”

“You'll know the truth.”

Daniel looked at Chloe.

She nodded.

He pressed it.

Every screen in Times Square changed.

A single image appeared.

Five children.

Daniel.

Marcus.

Vanessa.

Evelyn.

Chloe.

Then a sixth child appeared.

A boy.

Daniel stared.

“I don't know him.”

Charles whispered:

“You do.”

The image zoomed in.

The boy was standing beside Daniel.

Daniel suddenly remembered.

A childhood friend.

A boy who had disappeared.

A boy Daniel had believed dead.

His name returned.

“Ethan.”

Charles nodded.

“Ethan Mercer.”

Daniel stared.

“My brother?”

“Yes.”

Chloe looked shocked.

Charles continued.

“He survived.”

“Where is he?”

Charles looked toward the crowd.

A man stepped forward.

Late twenties.

Dark hair.

Cold eyes.

He looked exactly like Daniel.

Daniel froze.

The man smiled.

“Hello, brother.”

Daniel raised his weapon.

Ethan laughed.

“You still don't remember.”

Daniel's head throbbed.

A memory returned.

Two boys.

A basement.

Their father.

A promise.

One of you will rule.

The other will destroy everything.

Daniel stared at Ethan.

“Which one am I?”

Ethan smiled.

“The one who forgot.”

The screens suddenly went black.

Then one final message appeared:

THE MERCER STORY WAS NEVER ABOUT THE FATHER.

IT WAS ABOUT THE SONS.

Daniel looked at Chloe.

Then Ethan.

Then Charles.

For the first time, he understood.

The conspiracy had never ended.

It had only changed hands.

Daniel lowered his weapon.

Ethan smiled.

“Good choice.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“No.”

His voice was calm.

“This time, I choose the ending.”

He reached for Chloe's hand.

And together, they walked toward the darkness.

Behind them, every screen in Times Square displayed the same words:

THE END IS ONLY THE BEGINNING.
