Chapter 20 - After the FireSix months later, the Mercer organization had collapsed.

Trials filled the courts.
News networks called Daniel a whistleblower.
Others called him a criminal.
He ignored them.
He rebuilt his life.
The mansion was gone.
The company was restructured.
The second ledger was sealed inside a federal vault.
Daniel visited his mother's grave every Sunday.
Chloe came with him.
One morning, she handed him an envelope.
“What is this?”
“I found it in the attic.”
Daniel opened it.
Inside was a letter.
His mother's handwriting.
Daniel,
If you're reading this, then you've survived me.
He stopped.
Chloe squeezed his hand.
He continued.
I spent my life believing control could protect people.
I was wrong.
Your father believed secrets made him powerful.
He was wrong too.
You learned the hardest truth.
Power isn't control.
Power is the ability to choose what you do when you finally have control.
Daniel lowered the letter.
There was one final paragraph.
And there is one secret I never told you.
Daniel looked at Chloe.
He read:
Your father wasn't the first Mercer.
His eyes narrowed.
At the bottom was a name.
Thomas Mercer.
Daniel frowned.
“Who is Thomas?”
Chloe shook her head.
“I don't know.”
Daniel turned the letter over.
A photograph fell out.
An old mansion.
A man standing outside.
Thomas Mercer.
And beside him—
a young woman.
Daniel's mother.
But the photograph was dated fifty years earlier.
Daniel stared.
His mother couldn't have been that young.
Unless—
“She wasn't born when I thought she was.”
Chloe looked at him.
“What does that mean?”
Daniel whispered:
“She changed her identity.”
His phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A man's voice.
“Daniel Mercer?”
“Yes.”
“I knew your grandfather.”
Daniel froze.
“Who are you?”
The man laughed.
“You've been asking the wrong questions again.”
Daniel stood.
“What do you want?”
“To warn you.”
“About what?”
“The organization wasn't created by your family.”
Daniel's blood ran cold.
“Then who created it?”
The man paused.
“Someone who is still alive.”
The call ended.
Daniel looked at Chloe.
She whispered:
“Maybe we should let the past stay buried.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
May you like
He looked toward the horizon.
“Not anymore.”
