Chapter 2 - The Race Against Midnight

The ambulance tore through the rain-soaked streets like a red-and-white bullet.

Inside, everything was noise.

Monitors screamed.

Medical equipment rattled against metal cabinets.

A paramedic shouted numbers over the roar of the engine.

And beneath it all, Chloe was fighting to stay conscious.

Daniel sat beside her, gripping her hand so tightly that his knuckles had turned white.

“Chloe. Look at me.”

Her eyelids fluttered.

“I’m here,” she whispered.

“I know.”

“No…”

Her fingers tightened around his.

“You don't.”

Daniel leaned closer.

“What do you mean?”

Chloe's breathing became shallow.

“You don't know what she did.”

Daniel froze.

The ambulance hit a pothole.

Chloe cried out.

The paramedic immediately checked the fetal monitor.

“Easy. Easy. We're almost there.”

Daniel looked at the screen.

Two rapid heartbeats flickered across the monitor.

The twins.

Alive.

But unstable.

“What's happening?” Daniel demanded.

“We're seeing signs of fetal distress,” the paramedic replied. “The trauma may have triggered premature labor.”

“How premature?”

“Enough that we're treating this as a critical emergency.”

Daniel swallowed hard.

“How long?”

The paramedic looked at him.

“We don't have long.”

Daniel lowered his head.

For the first time that night, the powerful businessman who had negotiated billion-dollar acquisitions without blinking looked completely helpless.

He could fight Vanessa.

He could fight lawyers.

He could fight shareholders.

He could destroy anyone who threatened his company.

But he couldn't negotiate with death.

Chloe suddenly grabbed his sleeve.

“Daniel.”

He looked up.

“She's not alone.”

“What?”

“Vanessa.”

Chloe's eyes filled with tears.

“She couldn't have done this alone.”

Daniel's expression changed.

“What are you saying?”

“She knew too much.”

“About the accounts?”

“About everything.”

The ambulance siren screamed as they turned toward the hospital.

Chloe struggled to breathe.

“Someone gave her the security codes.”

Daniel stared at her.

His mind raced back to the mansion.

The broken baby monitor.

The disabled security node.

The emergency lockdown.

Vanessa had claimed she knew every blind spot in the house.

But that wasn't possible.

Not anymore.

Daniel had redesigned the security system eighteen months earlier.

Vanessa hadn't been involved.

Unless…

Someone had given her access.

His stomach tightened.

“Who?”

Chloe shook her head.

“I don't know.”

“Chloe, think.”

“I heard them talking.”

“Who?”

“Before she attacked me.”

Daniel leaned closer.

“What did you hear?”

Chloe's voice dropped to a whisper.

“She said… ‘He doesn't know the second ledger exists.’”

Daniel went completely still.

The second ledger.

Three words.

Three words that changed everything.

The ambulance doors opened.

Hospital staff rushed forward.

Daniel was pushed aside as Chloe was wheeled through the emergency entrance.

“Sir, you need to stay back.”

“That's my wife!”

“We need room.”

“I'm her husband!”

A doctor stepped directly in front of him.

“Mr. Mercer, your wife and babies are in critical condition. If you want them to have a chance, let us work.”

Daniel stared at the doctor.

Then nodded.

The doors swung shut.

He stood alone in the corridor.

Blood stained his shirt.

His hands were still trembling.

Then his phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

Daniel stared at the screen.

One message.

YOU SHOULD HAVE GIVEN HER THE CODE.

His jaw tightened.

Another message appeared.

NOW YOU HAVE UNTIL MIDNIGHT.

Daniel looked at the hospital clock.

11:17 PM.

He typed:

Who are you?

The response came instantly.

Someone who knows what your father really left behind.

Daniel's pulse accelerated.

His father had been dead for six years.

Yet suddenly, the past felt closer than ever.

A third message appeared.

THE SECOND LEDGER ISN'T ABOUT MONEY.

Daniel stared.

Then:

IT'S ABOUT PEOPLE.

The phone went dark.

Daniel slowly lowered it.

Someone had been watching.

Someone had known about the attack.

And someone knew about the ledger.

He looked toward the operating room.

Behind those doors was Chloe.

His children.

His entire world.

Then he looked at the clock.

11:21.

He had thirty-nine minutes.

A hospital security officer approached.

“Mr. Mercer?”

Daniel turned.

“Yes?”

“We need you to come with us.”

“Why?”

The officer hesitated.

“There was an incident at the hospital.”

“What incident?”

“Your sister's vehicle was found three blocks away.”

Daniel's face hardened.

“Vanessa?”

The officer nodded.

“She escaped custody.”

For one second, Daniel couldn't breathe.

Then the hospital lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

The entire corridor went dark.

Emergency lights activated.

Red.

Just like the mansion.

Daniel's blood ran cold.

Somewhere inside the hospital, an alarm began to scream.

The security officer reached for his radio.

Then a gunshot echoed from the maternity wing.

Daniel turned toward the sound.

May you like

“Chloe.”

He ran.
