Chapter 2 - Flames of RedemptionThe night sky over Blackwood Ridge burned a sickening shade of amber. Five miles away, standing against the rain-slicked glass of the ICU window at St. Jude’s Hospital, Ethan Sterling could see the distant plume of dark smoke rising toward the clouds. Sterling Manor—the neoclassical monument to generational wealth, deception, and blood—was burning to the ground.

Behind him, the steady, rhythmic beep-beep-beep of the heart monitor was the only sound keeping him anchored to reality. Clara lay beneath white hospital sheets, her pale skin contrasting sharply with the violent purple bruises forming around her neck where Eleanor’s poison had nearly taken her life. Her hand rested gently over her lower abdomen, guarding the tiny, fragile life that had somehow survived the carnage.
Marcus Vance stood near the doorway, the silhouette of his broad shoulders framed by the harsh fluorescent light of the corridor. He clicked off his encrypted satellite phone and slipped it into the breast pocket of his tailored coat. His face was etched in stone, devoid of joy despite Clara’s survival.
"The fire department reached the main gates ten minutes ago," Marcus said, his voice deep and raspy. "The east wing has completely collapsed. The grand ballroom, the library, the family archives—all incinerated."
Ethan didn't turn around. He reached out and gently brushed a strand of damp hair away from Clara’s forehead. "And my mother?"
"The police found her burnt Bentley near the lower tree line, but the driver’s seat was empty," Marcus replied, walking over to stand beside Ethan. "Eleanor didn't burn that house to destroy herself, Ethan. She burned it to destroy evidence. And under the cover of the smoke, she vanished."
Ethan’s jaw tightened until the muscles in his neck strained. A cold, lethal clarity settled over him. For thirty years, he had lived under the delusion that Eleanor Sterling was a protective, regal matriarch doing what was necessary to preserve their noble legacy. Now, looking at the blood dried beneath his fingernails—Clara’s blood—the illusion was completely shattered.
"She won't get far," Ethan whispered, his tone chillingly soft. "I know every offshore account, every safehouse, every politician she holds on a leash. I built the security networks for Sterling Global. If she thinks she can hide in the shadows, I’ll burn the shadows down."
Marcus let out a dry, bitter laugh. "Don't mistake your rage for readiness, boy. Eleanor built that empire before you learned to walk. She knows traps you haven't even dreamed of. If you want to protect Clara and your unborn child, you stop playing the grieving son and start acting like a king."
Before Ethan could respond, the double doors to the ICU swung open. Detective Frank Miller of the Metro Homicide Division stepped inside, his beige trench coat soaked through with rain. He pulled off his wet fedora, revealing sharp grey eyes that locked instantly onto Ethan.
"Mr. Sterling," Miller said, pulling a small notebook from his pocket. "Your estate is currently a three-alarm fire, arson investigators are finding trace amounts of military-grade thermite in the foyer, and three of your private guards were found dead with silenced gunshot wounds near the south gate. Care to tell me what kind of war broke out at Sterling Manor tonight?"
Ethan stood up straight, towering over the detective. He stepped between Miller and Clara’s hospital bed. "My mother attempted to murder my wife and the legitimate heir to the Vance estate, Detective. Marcus Vance rescued us. If you want answers, ask the ashes at Sterling Manor."
Miller’s eyes narrowed. "We found something else in the wine cellar before the floor gave way, Mr. Sterling. A reinforced steel door. It was blasted open from the inside. Whatever your mother was hiding down there, she took it with her."
Clara shifted in the bed, a soft gasp escaping her lips as her eyelashes fluttered open. Ethan instantly ignored the detective, turning back to sink to his knees beside her bed.
"Ethan..." Clara’s voice was barely a whisper, hoarse from the chemical burns in her throat. She gripped his hand with surprising strength, her knuckles turning white.

"I'm here, Clara. I'm right here," Ethan breathed, pressing her cold knuckles against his cheek. "You're safe. The baby is safe."
Clara’s eyes darted past him toward Marcus, then locked back onto Ethan. "The locket..." she rasped out, her chest heaving as she fought for oxygen. "Don't let them... find the chapel... before we do..."
