Chapter 8 - The Swiss CipherEthan stood frozen, the heavy receiver hovering inches from his ear. Across the glass partition, Clara noticed the sudden drain of color from his face. She pushed open his office door, her brow furrowed with immediate concern.

"Ethan? What happened? Who was on the phone?"
Ethan turned slowly, looking into Clara’s bright, determined eyes. How could he deliver news that would reopen a twenty-five-year-old scar?
"It was Eleanor," Ethan said softly, his voice trembling slightly.
Clara’s expression hardened. "What threats is she making now? We hold the company. We hold the police. She has nowhere left to run."
"Clara..." Ethan took her hands in his, his thumbs caressing her skin. "She claimed... she said your mother didn't die in the car crash."
Clara stopped breathing. The room seemed to plunge into absolute silence. "What... what did you say?"
"Evelyn Vance," Ethan said, choosing every word with extreme care. "Eleanor claims she survived. She’s been keeping her heavily sedated in a private psychiatric clinic outside Zurich for twenty-five years as ultimate leverage."
Tears welled up in Clara’s eyes, but she refused to let them fall. She gripped Ethan’s jacket tightly. "She's lying. She's trying to break us!"
"I had my tech team trace the satellite ping," Marcus said, striding into the room with a grim look on his face. "The call originated from a relay station in Liechtenstein, wired directly through a private medical facility in the Swiss Alps: The Saint Helena Sanatorium."
Marcus opened a digital file on his tablet, displaying a recent high-resolution surveillance photo taken thirty-six hours ago inside the facility. There, sitting in a wheelchair near a high garden window, was an older woman with silver hair, carrying the exact facial structure and striking hazel eyes as Clara.

Clara gasped, dropping to her knees as tears finally cascaded down her cheeks. "Mother... oh God... she’s alive..."
Ethan knelt beside Clara, wrapping his arms securely around her frame. "We’re going to get her back, Clara. I swear to you on my life, we are going to tear that place apart and bring your mother home."
