Chapter 5 - The War RoomTwelve hours later, the safe sanctuary of the Vance Tower high-rise in downtown Chicago offered a stark contrast to the mud and blood of Blackwood Ridge. Standing on the sixty-fifth floor behind floor-to-ceiling glass windows, Ethan looked out over the sprawling skyline.

He wore a fresh black suit, his wounds bandaged under his crisp white shirt. In the adjacent private medical suite, Clara was resting comfortably under the constant guard of six elite Vance contractors and round-the-clock medical specialists.

The heavy glass doors slid open, and Clara emerged slowly, leaning slightly on an IV pole but walking under her own power. Her eyes were sharp, filled with a cold, glittering intelligence that mirrored her late father’s.

"The doctor said you should be resting," Ethan said softly, stepping toward her and taking her arm gently.

"I’ve spent twenty-five years resting, Ethan," Clara replied, her voice stronger now, though still textured with grit. "While Eleanor Sterling lived in my home, wore my mother’s jewels, and turned my husband against my family’s memory. I’m done resting."

Marcus entered the room, sliding a sleek tablet across the conference table. "The police have officially issued an international Red Notice for Eleanor Sterling. She’s wanted for attempted murder, arson, and conspiracy. But her assets are locked in litigation, and Sterling Global’s board of directors has called an emergency session for noon today."

"They want to vote on an interim CEO," Ethan noted, glancing at the tablet screen. "Carter Vance... your son... is putting himself forward for the position, isn't he?"

Marcus’s face darkened instantly. "Carter is ambitious, but he’s weak. He’s been secretly meeting with Eleanor’s foreign investors for months. If Carter takes control of Sterling Global today, he’ll execute a forced merger, liquidate the vault evidence, and pardon Eleanor before the federal indictment can drop."

Clara walked toward the high-res screen displaying the Sterling Global board members. She pointed directly at Carter's profile picture.

"He won't take control," Clara stated calmly, turning to look at Ethan and Marcus. "Because I am attending that board meeting."

Ethan frowned, worry creasing his brow. "Clara, it’s too dangerous. The syndicate knows you survived. If you walk into Sterling Tower—"

"If I walk in as a victim, they win," Clara interrupted, taking Ethan’s hand and looking deeply into his eyes. "If I walk in as the majority shareholder carrying the proof of Eleanor’s treachery and my father's legal will, they bow. Ethan... are you ready to stand against your family’s legacy alongside me?"

Ethan pulled her close, pressing a soft kiss to her forehead before locking his gaze onto hers. "That legacy died last night in the fire. My family is you and our child. Let’s go take back what’s yours."
