Chapter 7 - The Ghost in the MachineBy sunset, Clara had secured complete control of Sterling Global. She had frozen all accounts linked to Apex Financial, terminated five corrupt executives, and named Ethan as Chief Operating Officer and head of security reconstruction.

Yet, despite their crushing victory in the boardroom, an uneasy tension hung over the executive suite. Eleanor Sterling was still out there—a ghost with millions in hidden crypto-wallets and a network of hired mercenaries at her disposal.

Ethan sat in his new office, staring at a satellite map of North America on his monitor. Suddenly, his phone buzzed with an unlisted, encrypted satellite caller ID.

He answered immediately, raising the phone to his ear without speaking.

"You always were too sentimental for your own good, Ethan," Eleanor’s crisp, aristocratic voice came through the speaker, as calm and chilling as ever.

Ethan felt his blood run cold. "Where are you, Mother?"

A low, elegant laugh echoed through the line. "Did you truly think a handful of legal documents and an FBI warrant could tear down what I took thirty years to build? You are playing checkers, my sweet boy. Clara thinks she won because she sits in that chair. But she forgot one minor detail."

"What detail?" Ethan demanded, signaling his tech team across the room to trace the signal.

"Her mother didn't die in that car crash twenty-five years ago," Eleanor whispered sinisterly. "Arthur died. Clara’s mother, Evelyn... has been my guest in a private sanatorium in Switzerland for two decades. And if Clara doesn't surrender the vault drives to my operative in Geneva by midnight... Evelyn will finally join her husband in the ground."

The line went dead with a soft click.
