Chapter 3 - The Crypt beneath the AltarBy 3:00 AM, the torrential downpour had turned the gravel roads surrounding the old Sterling Chapel into thick, black mud. Located on the northernmost perimeter of the three-hundred-acre estate, the gothic stone chapel had been abandoned since the mid-1990s—boarded up and forgotten by everyone except Eleanor Sterling.

The chapel had escaped the inferno consuming the main manor, but the smell of smoke hung heavy in the damp night air.
Ethan smashed the heavy iron padlock hanging on the solid oak doors with a crowbar, the sound echoing through the darkness like a gunshot. Marcus followed close behind, holding a high-powered tactical flashlight, accompanied by four heavily armed Vance security contractors.
"If your mother left a vault here, she likely booby-trapped the access points," Marcus warned, his flashlight beam cutting through the dust-filled air of the nave. Broken stained-glass windows reflected the beams of light in jagged shards of crimson and deep sapphire.
Ethan reached into his pocket and pulled out the small, blood-stained silver locket Clara had worn around her neck. Hidden behind the faded photograph of her late mother was a delicate, laser-etched platinum micro-key—the true inheritance Clara’s father had hidden away before his tragic "accident" twenty-five years ago.
"She didn't booby-trap it," Ethan said, walking directly toward the marble altar at the head of the church. "Because Eleanor never believed Clara was alive to claim this. She thought the secret died in that car crash."
Behind the altar, buried beneath decades of tangled ivy and rotting velvet tapestry, sat a heavy cast-iron door set directly into the granite foundation of the church. Ethan knelt in the dust, tracing his fingers along the edge until he located the concealed keyhole beneath a raised brass crest of the Vance family dragon.
He inserted the micro-key. A sharp, mechanical click echoed through the subterranean chamber, followed by the heavy hiss of pressurized hydraulics disengaging.
The iron door swung open slowly, revealing a narrow set of spiral stone stairs winding down into pitch-black shadow. Cold, damp air rushed upward, carrying the faint metallic scent of old iron and preserved parchment.
"Stay sharp," Marcus ordered his guards, drawing his suppressed tactical pistol as he stepped down the stairs first.
At the bottom of the staircase lay a reinforced fallout vault built during the Cold War. In the center of the room, sitting atop a solid mahogany desk, was a heavy steel ledger and a vintage video projection system.
Ethan approached the desk, his heart hammering against his ribs. Beside the ledger sat a sealed manila envelope marked in dark ink: TO MY DAUGHTER, CLARA - TRUTH AND VENGEANCE.
"Open it," Marcus urged, his voice tight with an emotion he rarely showed.
Ethan unsealed the envelope. Inside were dozens of original bank wire transfers showing millions of dollars moving from Sterling Global into offshore accounts controlled by a shell company named Apex Financial. But attached to the back was an official autopsy report and a written confession signed by the former Chief of Police—dated twenty-five years ago.
"My God..." Ethan muttered, reading the document line by line. "The car crash... it wasn't an equipment failure. Eleanor bribed the mechanical inspector and paid off the coroner. She personally ordered the brake lines cut on your brother's car, Marcus."
"I knew it," Marcus growled, his jaw clenching so hard his teeth clicked. "I knew that evil bitch murdered my brother!"
"There's more," Ethan said, holding up a sleek black encryption flash drive attached to the documents. "This contains the full master key to Sterling Global’s shadow ledger. Every bribe, every illegal transaction, every senator Eleanor bought. It’s all here."
Suddenly, the high-pitched chirp of Marcus’s tactical radio broke the heavy silence.

"Sir! We have a breach on the perimeter!" a guard's voice crackled through the static. "Two unmarked black SUVs just blew through the north gate! Multiple heavily armed hostiles advancing on the chapel—"
The radio cut out into a burst of violent automatic gunfire and screaming.
