Chapter 12: The Custody Threat

Humiliated and enraged, Julian lost his calculated cool. He realized the financial trap in Dubai was closing in on him, so he resorted to the nuclear option.

Three days after the gala, child protective services, flanked by high-priced corporate lawyers, arrived at the Sterling estate.

Julian had produced a miraculously "discovered" birth certificate and a forged legal document signed by his imprisoned brother, Elias. The documents claimed that Elias was not just Lily's adoptive uncle, but her biological father through a secret surrogacy, and that Julian, as her blood relative, was claiming emergency protective custody.

It was a blatant, disgusting forgery, but with Julian’s billions backing it, a corrupt family court judge signed a temporary 48-hour evaluation order.

They wanted to take Lily away.

"You are not touching my daughter!" Arthur roared, blocking the front door, looking ready to physically tear the lawyers apart.

Maria pulled Lily behind her, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm against her ribs. Lily was terrified, clutching Maria's dress.

"Mr. Sterling," the lead lawyer said smoothly. "If you resist, we will have you arrested, and the child goes into state care immediately."

Maria stepped forward, placing a hand on Arthur’s chest to center him. She looked the lawyer dead in the eye. "You have forty-eight hours of legal evaluation. She stays in this house, under armed guard, and we will comply with the interviews here. If you try to remove her from these premises, I will have my lawyers tie you up in federal appeals until you are dead and buried."

The lawyer, intimidated by Maria’s absolute, chilling authority, agreed to the in-house evaluation.

For the next two days, the house was a fortress. Arthur’s legal team worked frantically, pulling favors from federal judges, demanding DNA tests, and tracing the forged signature back to Julian’s payroll.

Through it all, Maria sat in Lily’s room. They played board games, built blanket forts, and painted. Maria never let Lily see her cry.

"Mommy, are they going to take me away?" Lily asked quietly on the second night, holding her stuffed rabbit.

"Never," Maria said, fiercely kissing her daughter’s head. "You are a Sterling. And I am your mother. No piece of paper, no bad man, and no amount of money will ever change that. I would burn the world down before I let anyone take you."
