Chapter 17: Silent Venom

The following week was an agonizing battle of attrition. Vance’s media machine relentlessly hammered the Sterlings, portraying Arthur as an autocratic billionaire hiding behind his adopted daughter's tragic past.
However, behind the scenes, Marcus had set up a clandestine operation inside the Foundation's secondary tech center. Working alongside Lily—who possessed a sharp, intuitive mind for digital structures—they began analyzing the origin of the leaked financial logs.
"Look at this timestamp," Lily pointed out, zooming in on an encrypted metadata string. "This document wasn't generated from an external hack. It was created using an internal administrative key right here in our New York office three weeks ago."
Marcus leaned closer, his eyes narrowing behind his glasses. "There’s a mole inside our executive team."
Meanwhile, Arthur invited Julian Vance to a private meeting at a quiet, neutral club in Midtown. Vance accepted, clearly eager to gloat.
The two men sat across from each other in a dimly lit, leather-bound private room.
"You should take the deal, Arthur," Vance said, sipping an aged scotch. "You’ve had a good run. Play the devoted father, enjoy your fortune, and let real businessmen handle global infrastructure. If you resist, I’ll unleash legal suits that will tie you up in court until Lily is in college."
"You underestimate me, Julian," Arthur said smoothly, leaning forward. "And you vastly overestimate yourself. You didn't construct this attack out of business ambition. You were funded by the remnants of the syndicate I dismantled eight years ago. You’re their last desperate gasp."
Vance’s smug smile faltered for a fraction of a second. "Careful, Arthur. Pride comes before a fall. You think your family is safe behind your security gates? Scandal has a way of tearing families apart from the inside. How long before Maria decides your chaotic life is too dangerous for little Leo?"

Arthur stood up, his gaze holding an iron resolve that made Vance instinctively draw back. "My family is built on a foundation you could never comprehend. Touch them, or try to use them, and I won't just defeat your firm—I will erase your legacy."
Arthur walked out, leaving Vance staring into his glass, an unnerving chill settling over the room.
