Chapter 9: The Enemy Within

To fight Julian, Arthur had to re-enter the ruthless corporate arena he thought he had left behind. He activated his old network, the loyal sharks of Wall Street who owed him favors. But every time Arthur prepared a legal maneuver to unfreeze the Foundation’s assets, Julian was inexplicably one step ahead.
"He knows our legal strategy before we even file the papers," Arthur told Maria late one evening in his study. "He’s anticipating every injunction. It’s not just surveillance, Maria. We have a mole."
The thought of someone inside their sanctuary betraying them made Maria sick to her stomach. They quietly brought in a private cybersecurity firm. For three tense days, the firm monitored every keystroke, every email, and every phone call coming out of the Foundation's executive offices.
On Thursday night, the trap sprang.
The mole was Marcus, the Foundation’s senior accountant. He was a quiet, mild-mannered man whom Maria had personally hired because of his background in non-profit transparency.
Arthur and Maria confronted him in the empty boardroom after hours. When Arthur slid a folder containing irrefutable proof of Marcus's encrypted emails to Julian Vance across the table, the accountant broke down, sobbing.
"I didn't want to!" Marcus wept, burying his face in his hands. "Julian... he bought the debt my son owes to some very dangerous people. He said if I didn't feed him your legal strategies, my son would be killed. I’m so sorry, Mr. Sterling. I’m so sorry."
Arthur’s face was unreadable, a mask of cold fury. But Maria put a hand on Arthur’s arm. She understood desperation. She understood doing terrible things to protect a child.
"Marcus," Maria said softly, yet with a core of steel. "You should have come to us. We protect families. That is what we do."

Arthur looked at Maria, sensing her plan. The fury in his eyes was replaced by a brilliant, dangerous calculating light.
"We aren't going to fire you, Marcus," Arthur said smoothly, leaning over the table. "And we aren't going to let Julian hurt your son. But from this moment forward, you work for us. And you are going to feed Julian Vance exactly what we want him to hear."
