Chapter 14 - The WeddingThe ocean was calm on the morning of our wedding.

Sunlight spilled across the lawn.

Leo wore a tiny white suit.

When Hannah appeared, everything else disappeared.

She wasn't the frightened maid I had met in a dark nursery.

She was a woman who had survived tragedy.

A mother who had lost a daughter.

A protector.

A lover.

My future.

She walked toward me.

I felt my throat tighten.

When she reached me, I whispered:

“You're beautiful.”

She smiled.

“You're shaking.”

“I've been shot at.”

“That doesn't answer my question.”

I laughed.

The ceremony was simple.

When we exchanged vows, I didn't promise her a life without danger.

I couldn't.

Instead, I promised something more honest.

“I will never make you face the darkness alone.”

She squeezed my hands.

“And I will remind you how to find the light.”

When we kissed, Leo began clapping.

Everyone laughed.

For once, the sound of laughter didn't feel temporary.

It felt permanent.
