Chapter 20 - The Door That Stayed OpenYears later, the nursery where everything had begun remained almost unchanged.

The same windows.

The same wooden floor.

The same rocking chair.

But the crib was gone.

Leo had grown into a confident little boy.

His sister slept peacefully in the adjoining bedroom.

Hannah stood beside the window.

I came up behind her.

She smiled.

“Do you remember?”

“How could I forget?”

She looked at the chair.

“You came in with a gun.”

“You came in with courage.”

“I was terrified.”

“So was I.”

She rested her head against my chest.

Outside, the ocean moved beneath the moonlight.

The mansion was no longer a fortress.

It was a home.

A real one.

Filled with laughter, arguments, birthdays, scraped knees, bedtime stories, and the ordinary chaos I once believed I didn't need.

I had lost Sophia.

Hannah had lost Lily.

Neither loss could ever be erased.

But grief had stopped being a prison.

It had become part of the foundation beneath the life we built.

I kissed Hannah's hair.

“I love you.”

“I love you too.”

Then we heard footsteps in the hallway.

Leo appeared at the doorway.

“Dad?”

“Yes?”

“Can you come see something?”

I smiled.

“Of course.”

He grabbed my hand.

Hannah followed.

We walked down the hallway together.

Just before I closed the nursery door, I looked back.

For one brief second, I could almost hear the soft rhythm of a baby's heartbeat.

Beep.

Beep.

Beep.

The sound that had once represented fear now represented something else.

Life.

Hope.

A second chance.

I closed the door.

But I didn't lock it.

Because some doors are never meant to be locked again.

And somewhere beyond that hallway, my children were laughing.

Hannah was calling my name.

May you like

Tomorrow was waiting.

And for the first time in my life, I wasn't walking toward it alone.
