Chapter 1 - The Voice Behind the Marble IslandI was supposed to be in New York until Friday.

Instead, a canceled meeting sent me home to Malibu two days early.
The house looked exactly as I had left it—glass walls reflecting the Pacific sunset, white curtains moving gently in the ocean breeze, and the expensive silence that had become normal since Olivia died.
Then I heard my daughter scream.
“You’re lying!”
I stopped in the hallway.
Sophie was four years old, but the sound coming from the kitchen did not belong to a child who was throwing a tantrum.
It belonged to a child who was terrified.
Then came the words that changed everything.
“You hurt me every day!”
I stepped into the kitchen.
Vanessa stood beside the marble island, perfectly composed in a cream sweater, her hair tied loosely behind her head. She looked like the woman strangers trusted instantly—the devoted stepmother, the philanthropist, the elegant wife who always knew what to say.
Sophie stood opposite her, trembling.
“Ethan?” Vanessa whispered.
Her face changed when she saw me.
Not surprise.
Fear.
I crossed the room.
Sophie ran straight into me and buried her face against my jacket.
That frightened me more than her screaming.
She had never been afraid of Vanessa before.
At least, I had never allowed myself to believe she was.
I knelt.
“What happened?”
Sophie wouldn't answer.
I gently pulled back the sleeve of her pajamas.
Dark fingerprints circled her small arm.
My stomach turned.
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
“She bruises easily.”
“Don't.”
My voice stopped her.
For weeks, I had noticed changes in Sophie. She no longer asked me when I would return from business trips. She stopped singing around Vanessa. She began locking her bedroom door.
I had blamed grief.
I had blamed the death of her mother.
I had blamed myself.
Vanessa suddenly began crying.
“You know how difficult she's been since Olivia died.”
Sophie lifted her head.
“My mommy didn't die.”
The room became silent.
Vanessa stopped crying.
I stared at my daughter.
“What did you say?”
Sophie pointed at Vanessa.
“She told me Mommy is alive.”
Vanessa went pale.
I reached into my coat and placed an old photograph on the marble counter.
“I already knew about the bruises.”
Vanessa stared at the photograph.
Then I turned it over.
An address was written across the back.
“I also know you visited Sophie’s mother three weeks before everyone was told she died.”
Vanessa's fingers tightened around the edge of the counter.
“That’s impossible.”
“No.”
I looked directly into her eyes.
“What’s impossible is that my private investigator found the woman you helped everyone bury.”
Sophie squeezed my hand.
Vanessa whispered my name.
I took a breath.
“He found my first wife alive.”
The glass in Vanessa's hand slipped.
It rolled across the marble instead of shattering.

And before either of us could speak, Sophie whispered the sentence that made my blood run cold.
“She comes here when you’re gone.”
