Chapter 18 - The KeyThat evening, Olivia stayed late.

Sophie was asleep upstairs.

The Malibu house was quiet.

Not the old silence.

A different silence.

A safe one.

Olivia stood beside the kitchen counter.

“I signed the final papers today.”

“What papers?”

“The house on Seabreeze Lane.”

I looked at her.

“Are you moving?”

She smiled.

“No.”

Then she placed something on the counter.

A key.

Not silver.

Not mysterious.

Just an ordinary house key.

I stared at it.

“What does this mean?”

“It means if Sophie gets sick while she's with me, you don't wait on the porch.”

I smiled.

“Nothing else?”

Olivia considered me.

“Not yet.”

I nodded.

“Tomorrow?”

Her smile deepened.

“Maybe.”

She picked up her coat.

At the door, she stopped.

“Ethan.”

“Yes?”

“You kept your promise.”

“Which one?”

“Tomorrow.”

Then she left.

I remained in the kitchen.

The key stayed on the counter.

I didn't touch it.

I didn't need to.

For the first time, I understood that trust wasn't a door you kicked open.

It was a door someone slowly decided to unlock.
