Chapter 7 - The Woman Behind the RecordingsClaire stopped when she saw Detective Ortiz.

The balloons bumped against the ceiling.

She smiled.

Then saw Olivia.

Her smile disappeared.

“You already knew,” I said.

“Knew what?”

“That Olivia survived.”

Claire looked toward the exit.

There was nowhere to go.

Marcus had already traced seven calls between Claire and Saint Catherine's.

Claire had helped create the documents.

She had processed the false commitment papers.

She had recorded my calls.

And she had allowed Adrian to edit my voice.

“I didn't hurt anyone,” she whispered.

“You helped them.”

“Richard told me Olivia was dangerous.”

“You never asked me.”

“I heard the recordings.”

“You made the recordings.”

Her face collapsed.

Then Sophie spoke.

“Aunt Claire gave Vanessa the sleepy juice.”

Silence.

Claire went pale.

“You put it in my milk,” Sophie continued.

Three times.

The same substance that had been used on Olivia.

Claire was arrested.

But before officers led her away, she whispered:

“Adrian has evidence against Olivia.”

The child-welfare hearing became a battlefield.

Vanessa's lawyers presented Saint Catherine's medical records.

Olivia was portrayed as unstable.

Dangerous.

Obsessive.

A recording played in court.

Olivia's voice:

“Sophie cannot stay with Ethan. I would rather see it all end.”

The room reacted.

Olivia looked at me.

“I never said that.”

Marcus leaned close.

“It's edited.”

He was right.

The full recording revealed the missing words.

“I would rather see it all end in court than let his father steal from another family.”

The sentence had been cut.

Truth had been transformed into a weapon.

The judge still refused to give Olivia unrestricted custody.

Sophie was devastated.

“Mommy came back!”

Olivia held her in the courthouse hallway.

“I’m not leaving you.”

“You said that last time.”

The words destroyed Olivia.

That night, Sophie refused to leave her closet.

I sat outside.

“Bring Mommy.”

“I’m trying.”

“You're Daddy. You can do things.”

I almost cried.

Because for the first time in my life, I understood how powerless money could be.

Then Marcus arrived.

He had recovered a video from Claire's laptop.

Vanessa sat inside a car.

A bottle was in her hand.

“Three drops in Sophie's milk.”

Claire asked if it was safe.

Vanessa answered:

“Keller used more on Olivia.”

The evidence was enough to break the first layer of the conspiracy.

Then Marcus opened another file.

Adrian and Claire.

Together.

They had been lovers for years.

And Adrian had paid Claire to lie.

But one mystery remained.

Why had Judge Miriam Cole repeatedly ruled against Olivia?

Marcus found a payment from the judge's husband.

To Claire.

The same day Claire testified.

Then my phone rang.

Olivia whispered:

“Ethan, someone is inside my apartment.”

I stood.

“Get out.”

“I’m hiding in the bathroom.”

Glass shattered.

A man's voice came through the phone.

May you like

“Where is the key?”

Then the call ended.
