Chapter 5 - The Cliff HouseFlames climbed into the night sky.

A black SUV burst through the side gate and vanished down the coastal road.

Police pursued it.

I ran into the burning house.

Olivia followed.

The air tasted like ash.

A child’s shoe lay near the fireplace.

“It's hers,” Olivia whispered.

We found Celeste tied inside a locked room.

Her silver hair was covered in soot.

“You came,” she whispered.

“Where is Sophie?”

“Upstairs.”

We ran.

The nursery door stood open.

Sophie was near the balcony.

Vanessa stood behind her.

One arm around my daughter.

The other held a phone.

“Stop.”

I froze.

Olivia stepped forward.

Vanessa dragged Sophie closer to the railing.

“Move again and she falls.”

Olivia stopped.

“Mommy!”

“I'm here.”

Vanessa looked at me.

“You brought police.”

“I came for my daughter.”

“You always say that after choosing something else.”

She began to unravel.

Years of polished control collapsed into rage.

“You ruined everything when you started remembering her.”

Sophie cried.

“You hurt me.”

Vanessa's expression cracked.

“You were supposed to love me.”

“You don't hurt people so they love you,” Sophie whispered.

Then Sophie bit Vanessa's hand.

Vanessa screamed.

Olivia moved.

I grabbed Vanessa.

Police stormed upstairs.

They pulled Vanessa away.

She screamed at Olivia.

“That money was mine!”

Only then did the final motive become clear.

Olivia was Celeste's first daughter.

And Sophie was an heir.

Forty-eight million dollars.

But Celeste had more to tell us.

She claimed Adrian had started the fire.

She claimed he had arranged the crash.

And she claimed Richard Bennett—my father—had financed Saint Catherine's.

My father.

The man who had attended Olivia's funeral.

The man who had held me while I cried.

The man who had sent flowers to Vanessa.

He had paid to keep my wife buried alive.

Then my phone rang.

Richard.

“Come to Geneva,” he said.

“No.”

“You don't want family matters handled by police.”

“They stopped being family matters when you put my wife in a cage.”

His voice became cold.

“You always were emotional.”

I looked at Olivia.

At Sophie.

At the burning house.

“And you always mistook that for weakness.”

I hung up.

Marcus arrived carrying a metal box recovered from Celeste's study.

Inside were bank records, birth documents, letters, and photographs.

There was one final envelope.

Olivia opened it.

Her mother's handwriting filled the first page.

If you are reading this, Olivia, I failed to protect you.

Then came the number.

$48 million.

Sophie was an heir.

Vanessa had not married me only to replace Olivia.

She had married me to control Sophie.

Then Sophie reached into her pajama pocket.

She pulled out a tiny silver key.

Celeste stared at it.

“That opens your mother's hidden box.”

Olivia looked at her.

May you like

“What box?”

“The one beneath your empty grave.”
