Chapter 8 - The Safe-Deposit BoxPolice reached Olivia's apartment in minutes.

She was gone.

The bathroom window was broken.

Blood stained the sink.

And the intruder had been searching for one thing.

A key.

Sophie’s silver key.

Celeste finally explained.

“There were two.”

The second opened a safe-deposit box belonging to Olivia.

We found the branch near the harbor.

The building was dark.

Then we saw him.

Lucas Grant.

The man Adrian had hired to follow Olivia's car.

He was holding Olivia hostage.

I wanted to rush inside.

Ortiz stopped me.

“This time, you listen.”

I did.

Because three years earlier, I had failed to listen to the people who needed me.

The negotiation began.

Lucas wanted the key.

I approached the doors.

He held a gun against Olivia.

“What do you want?”

“The box.”

“Who sent you?”

Silence.

Olivia spoke.

“Judge Cole.”

Lucas struck the wall.

But the name confirmed everything.

The judge was part of the conspiracy.

We entered the vault.

The silver key opened Box 417.

Inside:

Birth certificates.

Trust documents.

A digital recorder.

Lucas grabbed the recorder.

He played it.

Richard's voice.

Then Judge Cole's.

They discussed the pension theft.

They discussed Olivia.

They discussed how to make sure she could never testify.

The evidence was devastating.

Then the lights went out.

Police had cut the power.

The gun fired into the ceiling.

I tackled Lucas.

Olivia dropped to the floor.

Officers stormed the vault.

Lucas was arrested.

Judge Cole was arrested before dawn.

And Olivia was finally allowed to return home.

That night, she and I sat beside Sophie.

We spoke quietly.

“I believed you were dead.”

“I know.”

“I married Vanessa.”

“I know.”

“I loved her.”

Olivia looked away.

“I know that too.”

“I don't expect you to forgive me.”

“Good.”

Silence.

Then Olivia asked:

“Did you burn my clothes?”

“No.”

“Your books?”

“No.”

“Photographs?”

“No.”

“I kept everything.”

She covered her mouth.

Vanessa had lied about everything.

She had told Olivia I had erased her.

She had told me Olivia had abandoned us.

She had turned grief into a weapon.

I reached across the bed.

Then stopped.

Olivia noticed.

“Why did you stop?”

“Because I don't want to take anything from you again.”

For the first time, she smiled.

“Then promise tomorrow.”

“Tomorrow?”

“Just tomorrow.”

May you like

I nodded.

“I promise tomorrow.”
